later in the season not as much for brush/leaves to conceal your movement.  Also, the leaves are on the ground and freeze at night to become crunchy in the morning.  Usually makes for a longer shot.

Shot-gunners, what shells/shot do you use?

#6 low brass in 12 gauge. #6 or #4 in high brass 20 gauge.

12 gage benelli nova with #3 shot.
Have a few BB shells along in case a Grouse is far.
.22 pistol along with CCI Stingers in case of a "close one".

Are you using steel shot? And if so, why? I can't think of a traditional forest grouse area in WA were non-toxic shot is a requirement.

Your shot choices would be mine in steel shot for ducks (#3) and geese (BB). Forest grouse aren't that hard to kill; in lead, I use cheap field loads in either 7 1/2 or #6 shot.

The 2015 WA Migratory Bird & Upland Seasons pamphlet has the non-toxic shot areas on p.18-19 and the license requirements for each specie on p.9. The pamphlet is FREE at any place selling licenses or on the WDFW website.

Savage model 24 22lr 20 Gauge its a rabbit and grouse killer! I got tired of wanting a 2 when i had the Shotgun and wanting a 22 when i had the shot gun!

Bolt-action Mossberg .410, or a Ruger MKII .22 pistol with a 6 7/8" barrel for when I'm hunting big game and come up on a grouse.

A while back I built a 10/22 style rifle with the PWS T-3 biathlon action, Ruger laminated stock and Kidd threaded barrel. It's an absolute tack driver and with the suppressor on it she's about as loud as an air gun. Taking it out on it's maiden hunt this Thursday. Pretty excited!

Operator as Grouse!

I've killed grouse with: slingshot, .22 LR, .410 shotgun, 20 ga, 12 ga, .54 cal muzzleloader with 425 gr Maxi ball, 30-30 Win, and .300 Win Mag.  Out of those, I prefer the 20 ga.
