Get Home Gun
« on: September 17, 2015, 09:12:11 AM »
Alright so I know this idea has been beat to death but I like to have these types of conversations so I thought why not one more. The idea of a "get home" gun is not new and frankly is an idea I really think works for some of us who work rather far from home.

So here are the parameters:

1) you work 30+ mile from home
2) you carry a side arm every day
3) you will have to make at least one stop along the way
4) while space is not a big issue keep it in mind (discretion is more important)
5) cost is not a huge factor as well but again keep it in mind. this will be with you always and probly get kicked around a bit and possibly destroyed.

The reasoning for each gun I have selected, if there is one I missed please vote OTHER and explain.

Mossberg 500 Cruiser: These are cheap and plentiful, I literally just saw one at the last gunshow for just over $200. 12 gauge is also plentiful and hard to argue with. I have shot pistol grip shotguns before and they are not THAT big of a deal to me. Yes I'm a bit slower with one compared to a full size stock but I'm just as accurate at buckshot ranges, being smaller is an acceptable trade off for me. Cons are the limited ammo and range.

TNW Aero Survival: I really like how these things break down, and they use Glock mags which I carry anyways (I carry a G26 everyday and have G17 mags for reloads). I like the added range and ammo capacity as well. Cons are these thing have creeped up in price to over $600 and the scope leaves something to be desired and would probly get replaced (adding to cost). also while people have done reviews on them there hasn't been any done on long term durability and reliability (mud, dirt sand). Also slower to deploy.

AR-7: Small, light, inexpensive and self contained. Cons; I HATE the idea of using 22lr, to me its unacceptable for self defense. the only reason I am considering it is I have my normal EDC gun. Also slow to deploy and only 10rd mags.

Mares Leg .44Mag: VERY small and packs a big punch. I already have .44 mag so ammo is no big concern. cons are these are expensive for what they are, around $650. Also they are chopped down rifles and don't handle that great. also limited ammo.

KelTec Sub 2000: Fast to deploy and takes Glock mags. Cons; I don't like KelTec's and the thought of trusting my life to one makes me shiver. While I have friends who have had good luck with them, KelTecs QC and reputation for reliability is spotty. also These are expensive (about $500) and hard to find. However again I have my normal EDC if this thing goes down.

Alright guys what are your thoughts?

I would pick the Mossberg.  With a pocketful of slugs and buckshot, you can do a lot.  Ammo is also cheaper for a shotgun, though bulkier to carry.

I would pick the Mossberg as well but i would ad some type of folding stock to it and change the barrel to one the same length with rifle sights and removable chokes.

Can't really go wrong with the shotty. But I have plans to build one of these as my  Urban uh-oh gun.

Other.

Stick with my sidearm and extra mags in that scenario.  Concealable and low-profile.   If I end up walking, I would rather be more mobile and inconspicuous than armed for crowd control or intermediate range engagements.

If we are talking WWIII, end of the world, stick with a standard AR or other battle rifle.

Hence Parameter #4: Discretion. All these guns listed can fit in a small bag or even be concealed under a jacket.

The AR crossed my mind but like I said this will be with you 100% of the time. the odds of me ever needing it are slim, but the odds of me getting in a car accident over 30+ miles one way are actually statistically higher. If I were to get into an accident I would rather have a $250 Mossberg get destroyed over a $2000 AR.

Fair point on price.  I guess I could see the usefulness in riot suppression or crowd defense.  But in those situations, I wouldn't want a long-arm concealed but at the ready.  My first preference would have been to avoid those situations in the first place.

I don't want to derail the topic.  Perhaps you could explain some scenarios that these selections would be useful or more useful than just your concealed sidearm.

Because, perhaps I need a new gun and don't know it yet.

I just did this for b23 and I'm pretty sure his wife put a contract out on my head lol. Anyways there a couple scenarios were an extra firearm could come in handy.

1) Mass riots. I use to think this was not a reality but recent events have convinced me otherwise.
2) Civil unrest do to (insert event here)
3)I usually carry IWB on my hip. while driving this can be problematic to get to, so having another gun riding "shotgun" would be faster and easier to access possibly.
4) arming someone else that I needed to pick up or another person I have with me that maybe doesn't carry all the time. This could be do to bad weather and that person couldn't get out without a capable vehicle.

Just a couple thoughts. And frankly pistols suck. The only reasons we use them is they are handy, easy to conceal and keep with us all the time. Sometimes you just gotta have something bigger

Already set up...

Got the ASR in 45ACP to go with my Glock 21.

Man sized targets to 200 yards can be done with the ASR...after that, the 45 is dropping like a stone.

Gotcha!  Then AR, for me.  Or possibly some version of 12 gauge shotgun.

Shotgun but I would shorten it up so it can be maneuvered easily within a house, stair cases and halls.

I voted other.
P14/45 on my hip
Plus a folding stock AK in the truck
Plenty of ammo for both

My friend, you don't know the half of it!!

I completely sent her over the edge last week when I bought a new G20 Gen4 from Carpsniper.

I promised I'd stop looking for awhile but my "awhile" really just means I'm not looking at anymore, today! 😉

Other-Remington 870 Police Model with 3 beed sight and a side saddle shell holder, flashlight mount in the pump handle. I would have one of the ammo belts rigged up to it like a sling. Considering that I would be carrying a handgun already, I would have the gun loaded with slugs for longer distances/ punching through things IE vehicle window or a door panel if needed to slow an attacker.

Other-Option 2 would be an Arsenal SLR 95 AK-47 with the side folding stock. The AK-47 is a rugged, reliable firearm that requires little to no maintenance to function properly every time. The 7.62x39 is an extremely effective round within the ranges of an AK (200 yards or so) With minimal cost of ammunition the availability of magazines, and the acceptable accuracy of the SLR models of AK's this would be an extremely viable option for a get home gun, Also with the added option of mounting an Eotech sight to one of these they are very fast handling weapons for multiple target engagements..

always wanted that kel-tec KSG shot gun so I vote for that  :chuckle:

bull pup design would be handy if you're trying to fight from within in a vehicle,  slugs in one tube, shot in the other.
