Quail, Chukar, and Hun Opportunities

I am new to the area and am looking for hunting opportunities in the areas east of Ellensburg. I live in Olympia and have two Brittanies that I would like to work on wild birds. Not looking for your honey hole, just want some tips and pointers about where to start the scouting mission. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thinking about camping at Lincon Rock and working around from there.

Go to the WDFW website and/or the current 2015 Waterfowl & Upland Bird Regs. to see the counties with the highest harvest totals for each specie; then go to the Hunting section of the website and match Wildlife Areas and other public land opportunities for each one. I think you will find doing your own research in this fashion is not all that hard.

Thanks for the tip on the WDFW website. I have already spent a good deal of time on the site and have a good idea about where I can hunt. I have not found the public land, as I have focused on the permission to hunt, reservations hunts etc.

Finding good bird areas involves spending lots of time driving and walking. Preparation for bird season is something I do year-round.

Since you live in Olympia, you have a great public resource in the main office for WDFW…Visit it and ask questions! The WDFW Region 2 and Region 3 Offices are worth contacting as well; once again, the WDFW website.

Buy a copy of the Washington Atlas & Gazeeteer (available at most major outdoor gear retailers, bookstores, and online). On about p.11 a good portion of the major WDFW Areas are listed with their locations.

Just West of Olympia, you and your dogs have the opportunity to hunt forest grouse in the Olympic National Forest (buy a map) and the private timberlands open to public hunting.
