Browns creek area GMU636
« on: September 30, 2015, 06:57:24 AM »
So I have been doing some research on the browns creek area. I believe the GMU is 636 Skokomish. What I want to know is first , has anyone ever hunted that area and is the area huntable because most maps I look at show the browns creek area in the Olympic national forest which I know cannot be hunted. I am just trying to stay legal for modern season. And is there a lot forest service roads to drive around in the area? Clear cuts? And my last question is the area tough to find? I have never been to browns creek. All I know is that when I hit highway 101 coming from Union I take a left instead of a right. If I go right it will take me to Potlatch. Any information on this area would be greatly appreciated. :)

I've been there a few times but never hunted it. That is part of the Olympic National Forest, which is all open to hunting. There are lots of roads but I believe some of them are gated during hunting season.

I've shot 2 bucks on the other side of the high steel bridge, which is basically the backside of lake Cushman.  Lots of clear cuts and lots of deer and grouse.

NATAS5150,
I believe you are thinking of the Olympic Nt'l PARK which cannot be hunted. The Olympic Nt'l FOREST is open for hunting (Deer, Bear, Cougar, bobcat, forest grouse- NOT ELK).
Yes, the unit you are referring to is GMU 636, and holds some really nice deer. Especially if you are willing to put in some time scouting and getting out of your vehicle, as most pressure in this unit comes from "Road Hunters".
Higher up, the deer thin out quite a bit, but that is also where some of the largest (Blktail) bucks in the state can be found. There is an immense amount of Cougar and Bear in 636 as well. GMU 636 is open for hunting "Any Deer". The West side of 636 gets very little pressure as most hunters enter the unit through the Skokomish side. However, if you have the legs and ambition to make it into the divide between the Skokomish and Wynoochie Watersheds, you will find a lot of deer, some real trophy bucks, and few, if any other hunters.

Tried a late season in that area. Bit before the Browns creek area. Had to make it through some flooding but was a fun hunt. Had a decent buck cross the road but couldn't find him in the woods. Plenty of area to hunt
Worst day hunting is better than best day working!
