Another Bullet ?
« on: January 16, 2009, 02:24:52 PM »
I've been reading through the threads on this Forum and have read a lot of good advise when it comes to bullet choices for the .223. Only problem is I don't have a scope for my AR-15, I do however have one on my 30.06. I reload and would like to know is there any bullets small enough (30.06) to hunt yots with that wont tear them apart. I've done some searches online and the smallest I have found so far for an .06 is 110gr.

a .30 caliber bullet is going to punch a whole in them and tear them up, pick a bullet that won't come apart and shoot it. thats the best you can do. there's been talk about such a light bullet having stability issues out of an .06
or take the scope off the -06 and put it on your AR, but you'll still tear them up without the right bullet...
or buy another scope.

Id prolly go with a qaulity big game bullet that wont break apart over the low grain bullets because they will most likely come a part at high velocitys fromt he 06 hitting them in bone....

I load 90 grain 30 carbine into 30/06 but I expect they will mess up a yote pretty bad.  If you use a full metal jacket pointed bullet it should zip right through without expanding.  Bullet weight shouldn’t matter.

FMJ's are a  :bdid:.  You'll wound more than you kill on the spot.  More chance of ricochet.  At least that's what I've read on here.

I've read the same about FMJ but that was about the .223 and it was not recamended due to the small diameter of the bullet. I would think a FMJ on a .30 cal would be of but what do I know I have never tried shoot a yote.

barnes x bullets will leave a pen sized exit hole. obviously not ideal to be coyote hunting with an '06 but id use the x's. weight won't matter, pick the one that groups best. as long as you don't hit the shoulder you shouldn't tear anything up.

Used to be able to buy sabots for the 30 cal rifles and shoot .224 bullets out of them. I never tried it myself though. I think I do have some reloading data somewhere for that.

Yep, They are still available

You might try using some cheap 130 gr bullets but just don't load them up too hot.  Just load them close to or near minimum velocity......probably H4895 powder.  At low velocity, you shouldn't blow them up too bad.

I think you might have a hard time getting accuracy out of such short bullets as the 110's or smaller.........and they will be going at faster speeds.  Speed is what will blow things up, so just keep the speed down and you'll be fine with 130gr bullets.  Hell, you might even try 150's.

As others have said, a lighter weight bullet isn't what you need. It might be alright to use a lighter bullet like a 110 or 125, if you handloaded them to a relatively low velocity. But you'd be just as well off with a heavier bullet. When you get below 150 grain in 30 caliber you're really looking at low ballistic coefficent's and that will hurt you on the longer shots. I'd probably use a Barnes as wrangler suggested, and 150 would be a good weight to try for starters, but keep it at a low velocity, say around 2600 to 2700 feet per second. Just my  :twocents:

Here
is a link to the Hodgdon website showing reduced loads for using H4895.  Looks like 39 gr of 4895 will get you 2500 fps with a 130 gr bullet.  That should do the trick nicely for your needs.

I loaded a bunch of 130 gr Hornady bullets w/ H4895 for my .300 Win mag to just shoot targets with and they shot okay.  I never did shoot over the chrono though if I remember right.

Another option is using Blue Dot powder.  If you reload shotgun shells, you maybe already have Blue Dot laying around?
I found these loads from another forum when I googled Blue Dot and 30-06:
Quote
125 gr and 20 gr Blue Dot will give 2034 fps and 21kpsi
125 gr and 30 gr Blue Dot will give 2596 fps and 43kpsi
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Thanks for the info all!  :brew: I was talking to the misses this morning about the AR-15 (its hers and I haven't had it out in some time) and she said we had about 200 rounds of hollow point but that the AR has a carry handle so I couldn't swap out scopes. Does anyone know of any mounts I could get that will allow me to mount a scope to the carry handle of an AR?
God Bless,
Scott

There are several models of scope mounts that fit AR carry handles.  Google it or take a look at several on line site that handle optics and mounts.  I've had good luck with SWFA.com
