New English pointer.

the gentleman i got her from hasn't hunted her in a while whats the easiets way to get her pads to toughen up again or should i put boot's on her?

I'd suggest perhaps getting used to her and letting her get used/attached to you before you even think about going hunting with her. I brokered a deal once and found a home for a guys dog,when I dropped the dog off from one guy to the next who had got it for his son,I told him not to hunt the dog until a bond had been made, well his son took the dog grouse hunting the next morning,of course it ran off/to big,wouldn/t come and was loaded in a different truck and sent back from where she came not 12 hours after I dropped her off. This is going to be hard on your part, 2-3 weeks and I think it might be  a good idea to start off with some sort of a preserve hunt.

i'm working with her right now for bonding.  taking her out in park with check chord and bringing her to work.  She is sits with me in my office.  when i do take her out will still be on check chord for a while. The areas around here are all planted birds.  Thinking of taking her down to Hunter Farms but don't know much about the place but looking at pics looks like good farmland to hunt instead of clear cut like down in Belfair.  She's coming around slowly.  thanks for info.  noticing her pads are getting red anything to help toughen them up? or booties?

Bonding with a Pointer is actually a big deal IMO. If they like you and are convinced staying with you equals birds they can be fairly easy to handle. It's why I probably won't buy an adult Pointer again since I think they bond hard when you get them as puppies as long as you don't screw them up.

Having said that, you can't fight genetics. Some Pointers are born to light the landscape on fire and cover a lot of ground and others like to stay a little closer. If you can find anything out about the pedigree and the dogs in it you will get a clue as to what you are going to hunt behind. I know a lot of people feel Elhew blood runs closer and Miller blood runs wider but while you can generalize like that, neither is necessarily true. It's all about the specific dogs in the pedigree. I also wouldn't be afraid of range, it's easier to reel a big runner in than to get a closer working dog to get out there.

Regarding the paws. Nothing toughens up paws like actually working the dog. But if you're really worried about it you might try Musher's Secret.

Amen to the Garmen comments.  I will never, ever again put my pointer on the ground without GPS capability- they can run too far, too fast and it is a sickening feeling to have the sun going down  with no idea where you're dog is.  Regarding the pad toughening, I take mine for walks on concert/asphalt, which seems to help.  He hates boots so normally I keep the early hunts short as I build cardio conditioning...the pads seem to toughen up pretty quickly.  Enjoy that pup- good looking dog.

Be interesting to hear some of the names in the papers, dog has a rebel look to it. Rather than an Elhew look and it definately is not influenced by miller in any way shape or form.

Get a 50 ft check cord and run her on some gravel logging roads (behind gates) or other gravel trails where there aren't cars or bikes. even walks everyday on pavement will do the trick Her pads will toughen up pretty quick.
