Montana Roll Call
« on: November 08, 2015, 04:30:32 PM »
It's that time of year when most of huntwa heads to MT.  Who all is headed over?  My dad, a buddy, his wife, and I leave tomorrow.  Headed to SE MT.  Can't wait to get there.

I'm in Montana right now. The little guys are in love right now. The bigger bucks might need another week to get there. Passing up quite a few 20-22" bucks looking for something bigger. I have seen them but not able to close the deal. Headed home tomorrow night so it might be tag soup if something doesn't happen in the morning .

Me and a hunting buddy hunted Jordan and Bruseth area about 10 years ago. Those were my first years hunting Montana. We hunted block management and met some nice land owners over there. Of course we brought along a lot of smoked salmon. After that it was in the Lincoln area for a couple years. Now it's Ashland since I have a niece that lives over there. Kind of a long drive just for a deer or two but since it's with my brothers it'll be fun.

Been out in MT. since September back to WA. next month.
My son got to joins us for a while before "Shipping out" so we kept him busy, this will be his last time hunting for at least 2 years.  We wanted him remember it.

I'm not heading over until Thanksgiving for a short 4 day run.  I really wanted to drop Montana out of the line up because the price of the tag is just stupid, but my dad picked up a tag and wanted me to go, so I figured if I'm gonna go, I better have a tag too.  Will be a good filler hunt to top off the season.  Good luck everyone and shoot straight

Last two times we hunted MT were near Winnett, nice area, we did okay over there.

Just returned last night from a combo hunt! We hunted SE MT and NE WY, we came home with 11 animals! We got two antelope bucks in the 13-14" range and 9 does!! We had a blast and saw a ton of game, even a wild herd of Bison!!!

Hope everyone has a great time!!

Last morning buck down

Found a dead bull on my buddy's ranch. Game warden came out and decided it died from fighting. We got to keep the head because it was natural causes of death.

It's Montana, everyone has access to private land.  It's called the BMA system.  One of the only things Montana has going for them.  Cost sure isn't one of those things :chuckle:

Now that's funny. I will remember to tell the land owner that next time I am over there and the elk herd is milling around in his field. I am sure he will welcome me back to hunt there year after year for thinning out his cattle's competition.  :chuckle:

Well if there is a sign in box for that property then ya you can just go bang.  Don't even need to talk with the land owner.  Just fill out the card and go hunt.   :dunno:

Provided that they are in Block Management program. Alot of land owners are bailing in that program and just leasing out their property to hunt groups, right Huntinphool?

I'm with ya now.  Little bad blood or chip on the shoulder going on.  Well personally I have never had one single issue with finding access to BMA land, or even knocking on doors and talking to land owners.  Heck my two biggest bucks out of montana, a 171" and a 164" came off state lands

There is also quite a bit of Block Mgmt. you will never get access to.  A lot of BM that is like Washingtons Public hunting by written permission only program that you will never get permission on.  The land owners won't give out permission and save it for friends and family hunting and then collect the funds from the state for allowing people to hunt on it.  Or they will give you permission to go hunt a little piece of plowed dirt.  They get their Safety Zones and a pay check its win - win for them.

BLRman, You knocked on a farmers door? When did this happen? lol.

I will be headed over to Montana this Thursday. Going to be there for 7 days. Should be a good time. The best part of hunting Montana is being able to hunt the middle of the rut. We hit the rut perfect last year and it was awesome. But that's also a big reason why its hard to find a 160"+ buck over there. They are there and I have killed them, but they are few and far between. Good luck to all.

Well we got here early this morning and the majority of our area we planned to hunt we can not hunt due to locked gates miles from where we wanted to be. We just got to our room so now we are trying to come up with a plan b. Not good!

No luck for us but did see 3 bucks, two which were solid shooters but no shots. Those dang mountain whitetails sure are skittish. How I got busted by the first buck still baffles me  :o

Just got home from a great trip to Montana. Got out for an hour on the last day to shoot a few divers. It's not a huge haul but it was a great hunt with a good friend. I love the picture as well.
