Confused as to why the license plate matters....   :dunno:

I don't want my license plates posted all over the Internet. Would you? There should be some degree of personal privacy I think.

I wouldn't care. When I'm out driving in public everyone can see my plate.

Show me the license plate of a ford truck.
I'll get the vin #.
I'll make a key.
I'll get our address.
I'll come and open your truck.
I'll hit our garage door opener and I'll walk into your house.
Just throwing it out there as a possibility.

Jackelope, not sure how you could do all those things with just a license plate number, but if true, maybe I should be covering up my plates while driving around? You're telling me, my license plates being visible to the public is putting my family at risk?

Exactly what I was thinking. Jackelope is this just something on Ford trucks or every vehicle?

Seems like there would be way more theft if it's as easy as your making it sound. If someone wanted to go look at license plates they should go to a mall not on a hunting forum.

I understand now that's it's a privacy thing now, it's changed.

Lots of sue-happy people out there. But also lots of bad guys trolling for opportunity. If the guy who owns the truck ended up having a legal bull in there, but was wrongfully harassed due to this thread, he could sue NWKrenz for posting his plate number on the internet. Remember anyone can get on this website and read the threads, you have no idea who is on here.

and yeah, a license plate number and VIN would get you a spare key at the right dealership. I remember watching one of those "To Catch a Thief" episodes where the guy goes around to various dealerships with nothing but the two numbers written on a piece of paper and ended up with a few spare keys.

Well this certainly isn't about the Elk anymore, sounds like I'm getting sued.

I understand now that's it's a privacy thing now, it's changed.

To make a key to open the doors in a GM, Ford or Chrysler vehicle all the dealer needs is your Vin #. With the license plate, a person can get your address. Is this a far fetched thing to worry about? Absolutely. But it could happen. Get some dirtbag dealership employee and you've got all you need to put that chain of events together.
My biggest point is that it's a privacy and respect thing. Just like posting pictures of other people's animals without their permission.
