Next controversy
« on: November 12, 2015, 09:23:08 AM »
Have any of you seen the new broadheads that fire a shot when impact happens.  Saw an advertisement the other day for them.    That's a step up from the controversial lighted knocks.    I haven't investigated.  Curious if anyone knows what I am talking about.   It was being used on hogs in Texas I think.

I honestly don't see the point of them, no pun intended.  Just use a handgun if you want to "shoot" them.  :dunno:

Someone did post this a while back BTW.

Yikes is right, those are probably better left as a novelty item. :twocents:

If I had a few arrows to destroy and a big red gummy bear was in my sights.....game on. Overall I agree, party trick and I'd rather use a handgun.

First time I had seen them Loki.   I was like whoa!   Any chance these will try to be used for archery here in Washington?

If you shot one of these and hit the "pocket" which under most situations is a survivable wound, would that be true for a point blank .357 round through this same area?

These toys are just that. A novelty to use on a bow in places where hogs run rampant and other feral critters. Made out of Louisiana i believe.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I've never used one. I recall seeing adds for them and a few shows using them for hog hunts on the outdoor channel 3 or 4 years ago. I always wanted to try one out but never did. Does seem like a bit of a novelty item. I could see how using them on under powered bows (think youth) for hogs could possibly be an advantage.

How much energy does it take to trigger the primer ?? Aka what's the max distance

Will a 357 kill an elk at point blank ?

I can already picture the threads  :chuckle:

These have been around for awhile.  Even if legal...who would use them?  Imagine the FOC on those bad boys.  Not to mention a lack of lethality.

Although I have seen this product before, this was the first time to see a demonstration.  Thanks for posting the video.

Very silly idea.  If you want a party trick, go for it.  Not for me, thank you.

Not to mention that it destroys the arrow shaft upon detonation. Did you see the end of the arrow in the slo-mo playback?

I saw these a while back and my first thought:    What kind of velocity do you get when there's no barrel to build pressure????

I'm not sure they'd do much to really harm an animal compared to a good old broadhead?????

I was thinking the same thing. Even shooting a gummy bear it only penetrated 1.5". Kind of stupid.

HAHA! I stopped watching originally at the signed photo on the phone book.

The headshot on the gummy was slightly disturbing!  :chuckle:

We found a coffee can in my grandpa's attic full of old pistol ammo.  Boy did we have a bunch of fun making arrowheads out of those.  Never killed anything with them but we sure scared the tarnation out of a few bunny rabbits and squirrels.  And of course ourselves!!

Our bows were made of viney maple branches and baling twine.  Arrows were whittled from cedar kindling with PVC piping on the end to hold the cartridges with a BB tapped to the primer.  And of course black electrical tape on dang near everything!!  What can't a kid make with an endless supply of electrical tape?  Amazing we three boys have all our fingers, eyes, toes and lives.  But we sure had a lot of fun.  Our parents...I'm thinking not as much!  :chuckle:
