In search of a good bird dog.

I am looking for a medium/large breed puppy that I can train for ducks or pheasant and quail. I would be more than happy to go for a mutt because money is an issue, and it absolutely needs to be something that will be good with the family. My family dog passed away from heart issues two days ago, and my house just doesn't feel right without a dog. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

We bought a female chocolate lab from a forum guy that bred them himself.  She is purebred, but doesn't have papers which saved a fair amount relative to a papered dog from a breeder.  I really like this method because their family raised the pups inside and they had constant socialization to their kids and family and she is turning out to be a great family pup.

It sounds like you are looking for the same thing I was - a solid family dog first and a bird dog second.

Another option is to keep a close eye on all the animal shelters near you and look for a dog that will fit your needs.  A good buddy of mine that has been a duck/goose guide for 20+ years does that.  He's had 3 great dogs, all from our local shelter.  Just have to know what to look for...

I have tried that as well. I went to all of the local ones and did an online search of the ones in WA. So far it looks like I may have to wait a little while for some litters to be born.

That is a Boykin Spaniel. He is five years old and weighs just under 40 #. He hunts mostly upland for pheasants and quail but is also a waters dog. Half the size of a lab, twice the heart. That goose is about 15#.

We have one more 8 week old german shorthair left from our litter. Its was breed through our two very famous show and hunting dogs. Let me know if your interested in seeing any pics of him and want anymore info. He sure loves chasing the pheasant wings around.

Boykins are great dogs!  Hunt forever, great family dog.  Big heart.  No slobber and very little shedding.

My wife ended up picking up a mastiff mix (our last dog was a mastiff mix), so we are off the market for now. Thank you for the heads up though. I think our next dog will be a GSP, but we are going to take our time and squirrel away some extra cash so that I can afford a well bread one (like the one you described).
