Thoughts on a Savage model 16
« on: December 20, 2015, 05:56:54 PM »
Found one at a local store in the caliber I wanted and it's on sale for $435, haven't heard much about them but thinking about giving it a shot.  Anyone have any first hand experience?

Scoped or unscoped?  They usually sell them as a package with a Nikon 3-9 scope.  Great rifle and will most definitely be a great shooter.  With the scope it is a great deal.  W/O the scope it is still a good deal.

It didn't have a scope on it in the case but theirs not much room in the case, the tag does say package so I think it may come with the scope. I'll have to ask

If that's a new rifle, I'd buy it.  Looks like the store has had it on the shelf for a while, it doesn't have the newer bottom bolt release or plastic "Axis" type magazine.  Good deal.  However, it may not have the Nikon BDC scope in the package, maybe the older Bushnell.  The Bushell would probably work until you could put better glass on it.  The rings on the Savage package seem to be a common complaint.  I bought one of the newer model 16s in .260 Remington a couple of years ago.  Had issues until I placed proven rings and another scope on it.  Now it shoots like every other Savage I own.

I still have the stock Nikon BDC scope, just haven't bought new rings yet.  Guess I better take care of that and put it on another rifle!   :chuckle:

It has definetly been there awhile, small town in the middle of nowhere. I'm going to probally pick it up. Will be swapping out the scope for a vortex and pairing it with some dnz rings. Just never had heard of that model so I wanted to make sure I wasn't gettin an axis for double the money

It is definitely not the axis.   It appears to be stainless too which is really nice.  I have never heard of problems with the rings that come with the combo.   :dunno: :dunno:  I personally have never bought the combos as I place leupold on all my rifles, but I know a few guys that have had no problems.  Just remember....whenever you buy a scope/rifle combo, it is a must that you unmount the scope.....place locktite on all screws and torque all scres accordingly.  They never mount them correctly in the stores.

I have a model 16 FSS (stainless pre accu trigger) in 300 wsm. The rifle is more accurate than the shooter and has killed every animal I have ever shot at with one shot, most of which were over 350 yard shot including one muley at 517 yards. I bought the gun close to 15 years ago and paid about the same for it as what you can buy it for now. I still have it, but it takes a backseat to my Tikka T3 and my Kimber Montana because they are way lighter. At that price, with the accu trigger and accu stock, I wouldn't think twice about buying one.

The Hornady Interbond in the American Whitetail box runs good through the 7mm-08.  Kid dropped his bull in 1 shot.... good weight retention as I found the bullet on the backside.  Savage shoots good and your proposed setup should work well.  Time to get the wife shooting too?

looks like a good deal to me ... I've been shooting a savage 300wm for about 20 years and it shoots great. I bought a savage 7mm weather warrior last year and broke it in this season on a deer and it shoots really well too. I would say you cant go wrong with this deal  :twocents:

Where did you find that smoking deal? I would pick one up at that price for my kids 10 years down the road.

Savage is having $75 rebates on the Model 16 right now....and others too.

davidsonsonsgalleryofguns.com    gungenie. There are Savage rebates now if I believe. Buying guns online is the cheapest way from what I've seen and for where I live.

No experience with the rifle, but I love the cartridge.
That would be a much softer shooter than your Tikka.
Good luck and Merry Christmas.
