6.5 Grendel reloading
« on: December 22, 2015, 07:34:30 AM »
Was reloading some 6.5 Grendel last night. I had 12 bullets left in the box so I was looking for some extra brass - because as we all know - leaving 12 bullets in a box is irritating... Found a small set of 14 once fired PPU range pickups sitting around so I went about sizing/trimming, etc and when I started to get ready to ream the primer pocket I noticed that these pieces took Large primers. All the rest of my brass takes small primers. I looked up info in a couple of my books and they said to use small rifle primers...

I have never run across a cartridge that has a different primer pocket size before!

Not sure about that but where did you buy the dye sets and what brand are they?

Sorry, my post was confusing - it's not the die, it is the brass.  The primer pockets on all my other pieces brass (mostly lapua) are designed to take small primers.  But the PPU range pickups I found take Large primers.  Additionally the books I looked at say the brass should take small Rifle primers.

Just kinda weird!

It wasn't confusing at all. I don't have an answer for you but I bet biggerhammer would.

New topic: I'm looking for reloading dyes for my Grendel and haven't had any luck finding them. Where did you get yours and which brand are they? Thanks,
PMan

PPU Grendel brass uses large rifle primers and a bit oversized from that. I have to glue them in to keep them from falling out after firing. I have read that Tula LR primers fit snug, but haven't tried any.

I use Lee dies and like them. That's where I got my grendal dies.

It's probably "WOLF" or "PRVI" brass with large primer pockets. I don't mess with the stuff at all. I have shot and still shoot allot of 6.5 Grendel/ .264 LBC. A-A brass is exellent across the board, Hornady cases about equal to it.

A member here now owns the 26" LASER! .264 LBC that flat shoots! One of the few that I regretted letting go after the fact. >:(

This is a target from when I was zeroing a new Black Hole 18" SPR barrel.

Here's some assorted loads that have worked in my 8 twist.

200 yards factory ammo

100 yards

Cool info.  Thanks everyone.

Yeah, I just bagged up that PPU brass for more desperate times!

My dies are forster dies with the micrometer.  I bought them several years back and they have worked well.

Looks like Midway has some dies in stock.

What do you use to glue them in?  I have this issue with some other brass I am shooting!

If you're gluing primers in there's something very, very wrong.   :twocents:

Same issue with 6.8 SPC brass.  Some manufacturers used SR primers, and others used LR primers.   :dunno:

I'm not quite to the point of reloading 6.8, but from what I've read SR primer brass is preferred.
