I hurts a lot more when you get back to the truck and find you drop-ed that high dollar call out of you pocket or left it by a tree somewhere in the last 5 miles chasing turkeys.

No way in hell I'd pay that much for a call. I made a boat paddle call out of poplar w/ a walnut lid. Called in tons of toms with it.

I'm with you PA. Its all what your into I guess. I like old cars etc. I also like making my own calls, etc. It is really easy to do if you are good with your hands. The science is really not all that complicated but getting the right sound can take some practice and tuning and the right wood combination. Its all what your into. I've made a couple nice slate calls but haven't tried to make a box call yet, maybe I'll do that before turkey season starts :chuckle:

PA BEN  I did that once..bummed me out.  A buddy made it for me a little zebra wood slate call.  More sentimental than anything.  2 years later I am chasing birds same area in Kettle Falls..bird gobbles I set up..find a tree.  I sit down and dejavue hits me hard.  I am also 4 miles in..but it looks really familiar.  I am sitting there working a bird.  I llok down and guess what is sitting there.  The zebra wood slate call and striker.  I picked it up..the wood was faded from the sun and I cleaned it up right there and called that tom in and shot him with it!  That call is now in my case and that is where it stays.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

Hey Yelp....thanks for the tip.  I have one of them calls too.....same wood, same maker.  Think I'll put it out in the sun for 2 years, as right now it doesn't call squat....lol. :chuckle:

I've gotten into kinda semi-collecting box calls over the last 4 years or so.  I've bought several customs from guys around the country.  Some sound much better than others.  All seem to call turkeys pretty well.  The calls I like a lot are getting harder to find.   Camp Callers by Doug Camp.  Doug died a few years back from cancer.  His calls have gotten more expensive.  There's something about using a custom box call that you know very few if any other guys are carrying with them.  A loud raspy ol box will often make em talk when nothing else will.... :chuckle:

One of my most unusual colored calls is a paddle I bought from Doug back in Indianapolis years ago....mid 90's I believe.   It made from popular but has a beautiful overall medium to dark medium green coloration with varying shades of green veins thoughout the entire call.
I was lucky to see it when he first put it out and bought it on sight.  Had several guys trying to buy off me after the purchase.  Have a couple of his calls.....all very nice and sound excellent.
