Camo Painting Ruger American
« on: December 29, 2015, 08:05:44 AM »
I would like to paint my Ruger American from flat black to camo.

Does anyone have a tutorial or guide they recommend?

Any suggestions and tips are GREATLY appreciated!

They sure do. I don't always trust folks on YouTube, which is why I asked locally.

Just in case someone had watched or used a specific tutorial, and could vouch for the quality or authenticity of the tutorial.

The quality of the video makes a difference. If you can follow along and there is a great outcome, then it may be worth it. There is a lot of hack jobs you might need to sift through. I've seen some cool home done hydro dipping that a guy could use on a stock. You would need a tote that would fit the stock length though. Good Luck! :hello:

I have done a lot of rattle can camp jobs on rifles. One thing to remember is you paint your patterns backwards in a way. Your first layer after primer is your foreground. Second will be behind that and so on. The back ground color will be your last layer.  I like simple plastic plants for stencils and masking tape if your good with a knife. I like fishing line for holding the plants in place. It will leave fine lines it spots but it adds to the contrast imo.  I started practicing on an old BB gun till I got it figured out(helped a lot!!)  many of my rifles I've done multiple times(strongly recommend removing old paint fist before re-painting) because I either get bored of it or it gets worn enough to look like crap. It will chip and scratch over time, depending on abuse. My rifles get used. Packed all over and threw thick nasty and it seems to hold up well enough for me.
Here is a few I've done and some that others have done to give you some ideas

Here is a great write up and my favorite way to do stocks.

I just did a American 22-250 predator I picked up just a bit ago. I just cut chunks of tape for that project. I will try to post up a pic in a bit.

My 10 year old son figured out how to do it to his Ruger American compact by watching YouTube. I bought the material and supervised but he did all the stencil cutting and painting. It turned out well I thought.

We used the camo krylon paint. It came in a kit with four cans with different flat camo colors. Took a lid to a bucket and put the masking tape on the bucket lid covering most of the lid then he cut the camo pattern pieces out of the tape using a razor knife.
