ISO Traditions Pursuit Ambush III Breech Plug, or a place to buy one.

I picked up a Traditions Pursuit Ambush III from the bargain cave for about 1/2 off (The packaging was damaged). The problem I am running into is that it comes with an accelerator breech plug that only holds 209 primers, and I have not been able to find a breech plug that will thread into the pursuit that will accept musket caps or #11 percussion caps. I want to hunt muzzleloader next year, but it looks like this breech plug may be a bigger issue that I realized when I bought the darn thing. I shot it the other day with some 209's, and it shot amazingly well, so it would be a shame if I couldn't get it legal for ML season.

I've never dealt with them, but you could try calling the manufacturer directly.

I emailed their customer services department today with the same question I posed here. You would think they would have more readily available breech plug selection for a brand that is supposed to be high quality.

The guys down at The General Store did a great job today. They found me the part number for a replacement breech plug that takes #11 primers, and I was able to do a search on the Traditions website today by part number and get it ordered.

Another thing to note, is generally with a musket or #11 cap, you will need a different firing pin. With all of our conversations with Traditions, they have assured me that conversions are not possible, however with your gun being an older model, you may luck out. I am only able to speak about the newer models on the market, like the G4's. I wish you the best of luck, and hope that you're able to make your new muzzleloader work!

I appreciate the heads up. Being brand spanking new to muzzleloaders, I didn't even think to consider asking about primers and hunting. I hope the part I ordered does the trick. If not, I will stick to archery and modern until either the rules change, or I can afford another muzzleloader.

  You could fire off a couple caps, without loading it, just to be sure.

I replaced the breech plug with one that has a musket nipple, and no dice. The musket caps are refusing to pop.

The firing pin is striking, but there is no pop. I tried to see if it was just a light pop, and if it would touch off some pyrodex, but no dice.

While I was at the SHOT show this week, I actually brought this question up in our meeting with Traditions. They have assured me that there is no conversion kit that will work on any 209 guns. They said that the head spacing is different on these models as well, and that it is a major safety issue.

Manufacturers will always err on the side of caution, due to the huge liability that goes with producing these firearms. With that being said, I would recommend selling the gun on GunBroker, or something like that, and picking up a Northwest model. You paid a good enough price for the gun that I feel that you can get about what you paid for it. You may even want to try posting it in the classifieds on other forums.
