Toyota clutch question

My 94 Toyota pickup started acting up today. When I push the clutch in it sometimes is very stiff like its catching on something? Other times it's fine. Sometimes I can release then push it again and it's fine other times I have to stop on after a few pumps it's fine again. Fluid level is fine. Any ideas?

Mmmm I had a 94 Toyota and the Slave cylinder went out but it was just leaking fluid everywhere

Master clutch cylinder? Slave cylinder? When both of mine went out (at different times) fluid levels were normal still.

I'd start there. Luckily those are easy and cheap fixes you could do yourself. Where I'd start unless someone has a better idea.

 ..... I had a 97 and replaced them both. It was having similar issues.  The master is what the problem was, but since I had high mileage I went ahead and replaced all clutch components. Take care of it ASAP.... I pushed my luck and it failed me returning from a bear hunt in the GP. It actually wasn't to big a deal, except for the fuel stop in Randle. There's not a lot of help to push a truck at 11 at night.  luckily they are fairly light if you don't have much incline

I once had the clutch in my pickup start coming apart.  Th e rivets that held the inner ring to the pressure plat failed.  I limped the truck along for about a week before it gernaded.  When it was failing, the clutch pedal felt like I was pushing against a wall.  It turned out everything was falling out of alignment.

This was the video I watched to replace mine. It was on an 84. Not sure how much different it would be from your 94. But it was pretty simple.

Had to replace the slave and did the master just in case in our 86 Toyota truck.  I watched a video as well, pretty easy overall, though getting a wrench on the slave was a little challenge. Ours lost fluid, got mushy, and eventually quit engaging, it did not get stiff.

One note, be careful of the clutch pedal return spring and hold onto it well.  Mine slipped out of my hand and disappeared under the dash.  Fortunately, it still seems to work.

You might make sure the linkages to the master are all sound.

If the pedal is physically  hard to press I'd say it's in the pressure plate or the front support for the throw out bearing . Crappy or low pedals com e from slaves and master cylinders

Would it be intermittent? Sometimes it works fine

My local mechanic said it may be contaminated fluid?

I have seen preasure plates stick internally or have a broken spring hang them up . typically when its in the hydrolics the clutch just wont release , stiff pedal or slip is typically internal to the clutch.
