o.k.  getting frustrated.

been out ALOT on the Kitsap Penn.(close to home)  and last few times been out have dogs barking all around me within a mile or so last night a lot closer.  I'm using a FoxPro and wondering what can I do to help entice them to come in... hunting areas with heavy woods and some clearings.  I set up along the edge of clearing near corners so I can get a good scan of the wood line to see if one happens to hold up at edge.

last night they were yelling could hear some challenge yips so I answered back they kept at it for a bit then went silent. I tried different distress calls at all volumes.  with the limited public lands in the area I sit in a spot for a long time.

guess question is what would you suggest.  and has anyone ever tried to stalk closer to the howling? and if so how work out for you.
thanks
jay

If you get a howl response try going to pup distress. Is your howl response a long howl like in western movies or a sharp strident yipping howl/bark? If the first it is a howl if the later you got busted.

Try a female invitation, if you get a response go to female distress or whimper. I think on some of these callers the  challenge calls are from an alpha male. So it scares the younger ones. Hunt coyotes like you hunt deer, spot and stalk. Good luck

When you say "barking", what exactly do you mean?  There are some sounds that mean the gig is up.

This time of year, they are pretty territorial.  You can call to dogs who won't cross out of their territory.  I've had them challenge bark be back and forth forever but not come in.  IF this is the case, you need to wait for another day and come into their area.

In your scenario (and I'm guessing here), I think less may be more.  My guess is you are calling too much too loud.   But, it's just a guess.....

IMO it is a little early for howling and coyote sounds.  Good for locating den sites and calling areas, but not so good for bringing them close.  Do you have vole or other rodent calls programmed in on your FoxPro?

Myself I would use the howler to figure out where they are.  Then give it a little time and sneak in close - couple hundred yards.  Then start with rodent calls extremely soft and increase volume over 10 minutes then five minutes of decreasing volume.  If a yote doesn't arrive within 15 minutes I move on.

Coast dogs are sneaky little buggers.  Open country dogs rarely do the circle sneak on a caller.  But coast dogs will do it often.  Because of this I try to call from the base of rocks or edge of creek...anything that could keep a dog from getting in behind me and catching my scent.

Most important thing for me has been to sound small.  Westside has no big meals for a dog until early July fawns.  If you sound like a wolf or a 150# jack rabbit they won't be coming in close.  For me voles and house cats are magic meal calls on westside.

If they call back to ya, and they sound relatively close drop the volume down lower and give more silence between your calls weather your using a howl or pup distress. If you're challenged, challenge them back but with a lower volume and not as long. Trying to give the impression of a smaller dog not sure if they want a fight or not. Good luck and have fun. Your huntin, it's all good!

I was sitting there fishing and this female opened up with that incessant rapid bark yip sound and wouldn't shut up for 15 minutes...

I get that a lot in the spring when I'm too close to a den with pups.
