Hornitized!
« on: January 18, 2016, 05:00:21 PM »
Managed to call this guy in this morning, using pup distress.  He came over a ridge at about 150, looking for me.  I let him saunter up to about fifty, yipped to stop him, and put a hollow point to the base of his neck.  No exit, barely an entrance.  Very fur friendly!  It was my second set of the morning.  No takers on the first.

The rifle is a Ruger 77/22, with a 2x7 Leupold, and Harris bi-pod.  Hand loads by my stepson....he has all the load info!  This late in the season my ammo is all mixed up together!

I shot a few with the Hornet and was hard pressed to find the bullet hole.  Never saw evidence of an exit either.  I remember one that poked it's head thru an opening in the brush.  I shot it in the neck and initially thought I'd missed as it pulled it's head back thru the opening.  Turned out it died on its feet and the way it fell caused it to pull it's head back.

Back then I was shooting a 45 grain Sierra spitzer,  11.3 grains of 4227 for about 2550 fps.  It was hard to get close to factory velocities with 4227 and the Remington cases I used.  Later on I shot Win 680 and 296 in the Hornet and got better fps.

Very jealous of your rifle. I'm almost done putting together a hornet. I plan to shoot the heck out of it this spring and summer

Any westside coyote hunters want to give some tips on type of terrain/setting to look for when calling?
