Bank fishing salmon
« on: February 01, 2016, 01:42:35 PM »
Hey guys, I am new to the fishing page of Hunt Washington. After salmon fishing last fall the wife and I are hooked! Ha ha no pun intended :) We do not have a boat so i am looking for other opportunities to catch some chinook and coho. Are there smaller rivers and streams that we can use our 8-9 foot rods to catch salmon (fishing off the bank) without investing in allot of gear?

The Yakima will be the closest for you for that kind of fishing. They do have a spring run on it but unless  the weather warms up in the mountains, my guess is that it will be pretty muddy come May. It does have a good fall run though and good coho numbers.

ive seen people catching them during the fall off the end of batemans island, never fished it myself, so I don't know how productive it would be.

Thanks guys, eventually I would love to have a boat. But until then just trying to curb the addiction. I am definitely going to look into the Bateman island and the Yakima river. As far as fishing in general is the Tucannon, Palouse, or Touche any good for certain species of fish?

The Touche and Tucannon are mainly known for trout fishing. Not sure about the Palouse, probably trout and some bass above the falls, below you can find bass and walleye.

The Klickitat would be a great option for you to target fall chinook and steelhead from August through November. Steelhead fishing will start in June and be decent throughout the summer when the river is in shape to fish. It gets coho, not great numbers. You will catch kings if you have half an idea of how to get after them.

Probably your best bet for bank fishing, close to our parts.  It's a fun river that produces good sized kings.
If you aint hunting, you aint livin'

I don't know about any small rivers or streams, but since you're in the Tri Cities, you're so close to Ice Harbor dam.  The season is short and you are more than likely only able to keep one adult fish per day, but you could fish for spring Chinook below the dam.  There are quite a few people fishing from shore, but the fish are decent size.
