New Mexico Oryx

My buddy Jeremy drew an Oryx permit in New Mexico, took this 36 incher, beautiful animals!

The tag was $1,600, airfare $220, hotel $320, car rental $300, it adds up quick! I did not get to go, I was but stuff(WORK) came up, I regret it now!

So how did that bull rank.  Good, Great, or what?  Don't they limit how many days you can hunt?

The Base Bio told him every year someone takes a bull over 40 inches, from what he told me this bull is sitting in the sweet spot which is from 35-40 inches. My friends cousin shot one last year that was only 24" tall, looked a bit smaller than this one.
He had 5 days to hunt, not sure if that was the season or his time frame.

So how did that bull rank.  Good, Great, or what?  Don't they limit how many days you can hunt?

the seasons is two days and three days depending what tag you draw

The season is a month long if you are off base (off the white sands missle range). Two days for the majority of on base hunts.

An Oryx Cow's horns are longer and thinner than a Bulls. A Bulls horns have more mass at the bases. Most 40 inch Oryx are cows. A 36 inch Bull is a Very Good Bull.

Are these things free range ? I knew there are ranches down there did not know you had to draw. If they are free range how can the state allow that?

New mexico has free ranging Ibex, Oryx and Barbary sheep. Ibex and Oryx are OIL tags. The best tags for Oryx are for areas on the White Sands Missile Base. Barbary sheep are over the counter tags.

 Nice looking animal, I was down in New Mexico this past fall at FLETC. A buddy and I went down to white sands a couple of different times trying to locate some to take pics but we couldn't find any.

I was going to put in for that agaun this year, but do to budget cuts its going to have to wait.   Will get one one of these days.  Would rather hunt Ibex though.
