What was messing with my bobcat trap?
« on: February 20, 2016, 06:58:11 PM »
Checking on traps and had a bobcat trap missing, the door was there at the set, but the cage was gone.  Had seen some cougar scat, and caught him on a trail camera a few weeks back, thought he had moved on so put the bobcat sets back out.  If anything at least I had a game camera on this set so I could see what happened.  About 50 yards away I saw the cage, in good shape but could tell something had messed with it pretty good.  The wire was a bit bent up in a few places, nothing broken and but structurally all was still good and the pan and mechanics were still good.

Wasn't sure if it was the cougar since the bait and lure was still in its place back at the set, my little furry googly eyed friend inside the cage was still there, scared, but still there and a lot of the cage wire around him was bent up.

Changed out the game camera, reset the trap went home and found out what liked the lure so much and what decided it wanted to fight with the trap.

and the fight

I know bull elk are crazy for beaver castor. My Dad and I used to trap coyotes in October and soon learned not to use anything castor based. Elk would literally dig up the entire area.
So then afterwards I got the bright idea to put a little out during elk rut. The idea to see if there were bulls in the area. Literally turned a rotten stump into a hole. Every place I put castor out they demolished any vegetation for 15 feet.
