2016 Transalta Dave Sherwood Memorial Scholarship Elk Hunt
« on: March 15, 2016, 12:52:47 PM »
So it's that time of year again as ticket sales for the annual Dave Sherwood Memorial Hunt Raffle are available to purchase. Drawing is being held Monday, August 1st. Tickets are $25/each and the raffle will be limited to 500 total tickets.

To give a little history, Dave Sherwood was a longtime employee of TransAlta. He was a great coworker, a great boss, a great family guy, just an all around great person. He was tragically killed while packing out his bull on a Margaret bull special permit hunt. In his honor, the Dave Sherwood Memorial Scholarship Fund was started. This funds a local scholarship to Centralia Community College. More than $36,000 has been raised for this endowment over the last four years through this raffle!  As a way to help contribute funds to a great cause, TransAlta has been doing an annual Roosevelt Bull Hunt on a weekend of rifle elk season to one lucky winner on their property just east of Centralia.

TransAlta will allow the successful winner, depending on weapon choice, the choice of one weekend to hunt. Rifle hunter will get access to hunt one of the two weekends during westside rifle hunting. Archery hunter will get to hunt a weekend during the late archery season. Muzzleloader hunter will get to hunt a weekend during the late muzzleloader seasons (dates to be confirmed when new regs are published). Before you ask the question, I'll clarify, that early muzzleloader or archery seasons are not allowed due to disabled hunters cow hunts taking place on the property (during early muzzleloader) and mine reclamation work activities taking place during early archery. However, you still have a legitimate opportunity to kill a healthy Roosevelt bull in the late season for sure. Just a reminder that this is strictly a drawing for access to hunt TransAlta property so hunting license and a western WA elk tag are needed.

This hunt can be gifted, so even if you are an eastside elk hunter but want to put your name in the hat, if you have a friend or son/daughter that has a westside modern tag, it can be done that way. I know some people have mixed feelings because it is only a 2 day hunt, but there have been bulls killed on all 4 raffle hunts so far.

You and one guest will be guided by a TransAlta employee. All WDFW hunting regs are to be followed, hunter's orange (for rifle hunters), 3pt. minimum, etc.

if you have any questions, please PM me or feel free to post. The money goes to a great cause, in memory of a great person, and would be the perfect hunting opportunity for hunters of all ages.

Dave was a great man!

"You just gotta have a little want to" Dave Sherwood RIP
Some animals WERE harmed in the making of this Hunter. They were also dragged through the dirt, butchered and tasted delicious fried with butter and bacon.

This is where the MS elk tag would perfectly come into play.

I'm not positive,  but I think  it is a two day hunt.

I'm buying a couple and if I win I will gift it to my dad who is aging and near done with hunting because of his health.  He has never killed a bull in his life and to be able to gift this to him would be priceless!   I suck at the Wdfw draw, maybe this will be different?  Good luck guys.

City of Chehalis employee Don Schmitt has won the 2016 Centralia College Foundation’s Elk Hunt Raffle drawing. Don will have the opportunity to hunt on TransAlta land for a single bull elk, three-point minimum, during the upcoming modern rifle hunting season.

The winning ticket was drawn Monday at the Centralia College Foundation office. A total of 220 tickets were sold garnering $5,500 to be split between a 2017-18 scholarship and the Dave Sherwood Memorial Endowment.

Since 2012, nearly $40,000 has been raised through the Dave Sherwood Memorial Elk Hunt Raffle.

The raffle honors TransAlta employee Dave Sherwood, who died while hunting elk in east Lewis County in 2012. TransAlta wanted to do something to remember Dave and his love for hunting; it offered the annual Elk Hunt Raffle to the Centralia College Foundation to raise money for scholarships.

“I am grateful that so many students will benefit from the proceeds in his memory,” said Sue Sherwood, Dave’s wife.

The raffles have been so successful that a Dave Sherwood Endowment was created to ensure a sustainable source of scholarships for the college.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
