Saltwater fishing rule changes you'd like?
« on: March 16, 2016, 09:12:17 PM »
Here is a link to WDFW for saltwater fishing rule changes.

 wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/rule_proposals/

Here's one I'd like - Please post a proposal to allow retention of one Rockfish concurrent with the Lingcod season and depth restriction.

The rule that needs changing (has to be filled out on form) is Rockfish - Closed to fishing for, retaining, or possession.

Justify by indicating that the endangered Rockfish predominantly live deeper than the 120 foot maximum for the Lingcod fishing season.

Thanks

I think the rule for hatchery only fish retention could be looked at.  If you have to catch twenty wild fish (unclipped hatchery?) for every hatchery fish you are allowed to keep...given the mortality of catch and release, wouldn't it be better to just keep the first couple of fish--clipped or unclipped?

JH, that is a good point.  Back in the day that you could keep Rockfish, you were supposed to keep the first one caught, and they are a lot hardier than salmon.

Allow the purchase of wands to check if a salmon has a chip in its head.

Is that restricted?  If so, why would it be? Do you want something to tell if one is in there or to read the info, can they do that now?  The last one I got with a tag, that I know of, was about fifteen years ago and the head had to go to Olympia.

You can buy CWT (coded wire tag) detectors , might wanna look at prices  ;) . Check out Northwest Marine Technologies . And no CWT technology does not work like a "grocery store scanner " the CWT tags have to be manually recovered and read .
