Anyone fished cancun/riviera maya?

Going to the riviera maya fort honeymoon in July, and the fiancé and I are looking for a legit charter or guide to go out with. Appreciate it! Also if anyone has done any shore fishing that would be fun too

Yes, I have fished many times out of Puerto Aventuras.  It's a small community south of Cancun (about 1/2 way between Cancun and Tulum), and it's just south of Playa Del Carmen.  Puerto Aventuras has a good sized marina and several good charter services. 

If you get a chance, go to the beach in Akumal.  Beautiful spot.  It's where my wife and I went on our honeymoon.

We'd usually go in March/April and then again in Oct/Nov timeframe.  In the spring, sailfish Dorado and Wahoo fishing is typically very good.  I've done well on spring trips.  In the fall, fishing is tougher, as most of the excellent fishing is done by end of July/August.  July is a good month, but can be HOT.  You should do well on sailfish and marlin, or target the Dorado and wahoo, which are really good then too.  Snapper and Grouper can be good at that time also.  Plus, I've caught Amberjack too.  A 60 to 70lb Amberjack will fight harder than a 100lb marlin sometimes! 

FYI, I've used both Pesca Maya charters, Tequila Sunrise and Captain Rick's Charters out of Puerto Aventuras.  All have been good at putting me on fish.  There are also a few more local boats there with captains ready to take you out too.  I'd suggest walking the marina and talking to the various boats (and looking at the tackle they offer).  More successful boats have better tackle.  Plus, if you walk the docks in early afternoon, you can see which boats are doing well as they unload.  Sometimes they will fly flags too, which depict what they've caught.

I will be I'm Playa the second week of april.  Did you find it better to book charters before you went.  Or once you walked the docks?  What's the average price per day?  Are the boats you went on pangas or regular fly bridge type boats?

I've always waited to book, but I'd typically go down there for 7 to 10 days.  Fly Bridge 31 to 35'.  For 8hrs, cost is typically between $450 and $600 for the boat.  Obviously, less if you want to share the boat.  Usually includes Captain, deck hand, gear, bait and Mex fishing license.  They also typically supply bottled water and sodas.  You typically need to bring your own lunch/snacks.

Pachangas can be had for about $250 to 300/day.  I've never gone out in the little boats, as they don't have the range needed for much more than bottom fishing. 

Good thing about going out of Puerto Aventuras is that deep water is only about a 1/2 mile out of the Marina.  So, you are fishing pelagic species right away.

They will still typically put out three to five rods.  There isn't a rod limit per angler that I am aware of.

I went to Cancun in November.  I didn't have anyone in our party that wanted to go out, so instead of paying for a full boat, I was able to hop on a shared boat.  I went out with Aquaworld. They do snorkeling trips to, scuba, fishing, sailing, seadoo, etc...It was great.  5 people: 3 serious fisherman and 2 that got sick/didn't rush the rods.  Headed out for 45 min, caught bait. then started trolling.  We were pretty much targeting barracuda, and any other bill fish that were around.  We hooked up with 10 Barracuda. I reeled in two 50-60lb'rs. And I was lucky enough to reel in a Mahi that struck at the surface jig we were trolling on light tackle.  We caught 2 other fish called "rainbow fish".  Almost looked like california yellowtail.  Nice crew.  Both deckhands were named Freddy.  They were joking and getting us hooked up all day!  I paid $135 for a shared spot.  And tipped $30 per deckhand.   I would recommend!
