Gunsmith For Re barreling
« on: April 15, 2016, 01:30:23 PM »
Looking to get my 300 WBY re-barreled, checked in with Benchmark but they are at a 3 month plus lead time which is not a big deal but would prefer it be done a bit sooner. Does anyone know of a good outfit withing 75 miles or so of Everett?

There are plenty of Smith's out there but finding a solid, reputable, stable, well known smith/company with a good past and reputation with a delivery time under three months is hard to do.

You are probably right, dont mind the wait as I know Benchmark will do an excellent job... Never really mastered the patience thing when it comes to my toys.

Steve Kostanich in Chehalis has a reamer w/a separate throating reamer.  Provide a loaded round and it will be throated to seat that bullet.

I am about fit to be tied myself, my Mcmillan stocked from the factory w/a McMillan Mod 70 WinLite in 300 WBY that has always shot 3/4 inches at a hundred has gone south.  Five inches at a hundred yards.

My buddy shot his barrel out after five-hundred rounds and paid half for that reamer ~ 1994.  He has the same rifle.

Mine has only ~150 rounds through it.  I have always been very respectful of that rifle and only sent two or three/year down range just to make sure it was still sighted in before elk season.

I got a Stoney Point modified case last night and my throat is burnt out for a half inch!!!  Does this mean that I am off the 300 Wby?  Not at all.  $450 for a new Lilja that will outlive me.

I was just fine killing elk with it irrespective of how bad I wanted 26 inches of barrel instead of 24.

New 26 inch Lilja and it will only be ~ a month.  Steve barrels a lot of the local bench rest rifles.

Grrrrrrrr!   I always wanted a 26 inch barrel, but dagnabbit I was perfectly happy with a rifle that would put three into a 3/4 inch group irrespective of how much velocity I was giving up.  It is stripping copper like a demon now too.

I will try to shoot it this weekend after cleaning it every night down to the point that patches don't have a hint of blue - but if it won't shoot 200 gr Nosler Partitions into an inch... just get the barrel ordered up.

And Steve will have it back in ~ a month.

Quality Smiths are abundant and premium barrels can be purchased readily with just a card number.

Might want to entertain the thought of H1000 or Retumbo and spare your .300 Wearherby throat. Mine has many more miles than you mentioned and still shoots comfortably tight.
