Back in 2009 I took my 2 daughters to the Black Lake fishing derby in Ilwaco for a weekend of fishing and clamming.
My eldest daughter Brigette (6 at the time) won 1st place for biggest fish in her age class and received a nice trout rod and tackle box.
When I found out that the derby was going to be on the 30th this year (not on opening day) I decided to drag my kids down there again, just for the fun of it.
We had a good day.
My son Dylan, (6) who was not around during that first trip, fell off the dock and into the lake, spent most of the morning playing, eating pancakes and hot dogs, and running around with his sister (Ruby-10)
Brigette (13) stayed on the dock and not only pulled her brother out of the lake, but also won first place for biggest fish in her age group AGAIN.
She has been pretty excited about how she only fished in the derby twice, both times she won.
Only problem is that this time she won a Lamiglass BL7050 7' Salmon rod, a Penn "Squall" SQL20LW reel, and a free trip with Beacon Charters out of Ilwaco.

Only thing is, now I have to figure out how to be able to afford to go with her, as I am not letting my 13 year old go alone...
And because she is proud of her new rod/reel I have to figure out some way to get her out salmon fishing for more than just a one time thing... (she does not want to sell)
