Hornady ELD X
« on: May 06, 2016, 06:44:43 AM »
Just picked up a box at Sportsmans for my Tikka T3 lite 7 mag. Got the 162 grn. Pretty excited to try them out. Some day I would like to get a load worked up for this rifle. But beings I don't reload I'm mostly using factory ammo. Been shooting Nosler 160 accubonds. The Hornady's are $18 a box cheaper.

Any of you guys shooting them? What do you think?

One of my buddies are I have been shooting them quite a bit.  We have developed loads in 260REM, 264WM, 6.5WSM, 30-06, 300WSM, 300RUM, 280AI and 28 Nosler.  We have achieved half MOA loads in every gun we've put them through. We've had to experiment some with different powders and seating depths.  But overall they are very easy to tune and produce excellent precision.  We will be putting them into deer and elk flesh this fall.

Good to hear people seeing good results. I have some 142 for the 6.5's and 220 for the 30's. I am looking forward to shooting them when I get a chance to start working on some load development.

I'm interested to know what seating depth are shooting best for you guys.  I've only loaded them to 0.020 jump in my rifles.  This has produced good results.  A few groups so good I'm nervous to try again as I'm not sure I can shoot that good again.  My buddy has been loading his at 0.005 jump.  They seem to shoot good there too.  Of course all rifles are different but usually a bullet has a particular seating depth where it will perform best - most of the time.  Once I finalize the 220 grain load in my RUM I will experiment with different seating depths to see what happens.  Although it put 3 shots into half inch at 200 yards - I don't see a need to improve upon that result!  Hopefully that load will produce the same or similar result next range session then I can start stretching it out.

It will be interesting to see how these ELD-X perform on game at various ranges and velocities.  The main reason I'm testing them is I'm looking for a bullet that will have reliable expansion at close range or long range.  Hornady claims the ELD-X will perform from approx. 1600 fps to 3000 fps.  There are places I hunt where I could have a 30 yard shot or a 900 yard shot.  Having a round in the chamber that will expand reliably across that range of distance is an advantage to me.  And I like to fill tags and my freezer so I'll take the best that technology has to offer.

I've had awesome luck with them around .013 ish in my 6.5-284.
Was hoping to pick up a box of 7mm factory loads to test while in New Zealand but they were never available before we left. So I'll have to wait to run them into fur this fall. Or possibly a bear this spring.

I ran some of BullBlaster's loads through Whitpirates 6.5 that I am accurizing and doing load developement for and they shot 5 shot .6" group at 100.  Slight pressure signs.
