Special Permit: Sheep and Goat
« on: February 01, 2009, 01:34:34 PM »
I was just on-line buying my licenses and permits for the 2009 season.  Every year, I buy the sheep and goat special permits so I can get in on the drawing with the hope that I might get picked for one of those permits before I'm too old to remember why I applied in the first place.  So, here's my question:  which hunt numbers should I be applying for?  Right now, I'm looking at the draw percentages but I really don't know much about which areas would be the best.  What would you advise?  Any ideas?
Thanks!

I can look out my front room window and see three of the sheep units.I spend considerable time in each. I am by no means any kinda super hunter and I believe I could kill a sheep any day of the week.

Ya I don't think you will have a hard time finding sheep in any of the yakima units. But finding a nice mature ram is getting tougher.

I don't think it's getting tougher.  We have more big cali rams that are 170"+ than we ever have.  All the units are decent if you could draw...

Do you think that there are many 170+ rams in the umtanum or cleman area? I always thought a 160 was good for these units.

my dad took a 172 out of umptanum this year that was about a month after the bio told us he didnt think there would ever be a ram bigger than 165 come out of the umptanum, i think it helps if you scout and find out where the big rams are, we saw a lot of rams down on umptanum creek (i dont even think any of them wouldve gone 160), and near roza dam (one good ram but nowhere near 170) , but the big boys were all in one group several miles from that area (5 others with the one my dad shot and every one wouldve gone 160 pretty easily) and yet everyone was hunting down by umptanum creek and of the 5 tags in the umptanum i think 4 were notched that day, we were up where the big boys were all day getting my dads sheep out and never saw another hunter, and it sounded like most of the others were hunting down in umptanum canyon
