RS as a ffg equivalent
« on: May 28, 2016, 12:09:03 PM »
Has anyone used the hodgdon RS and how well does it compare to triple 7 ffg?

It is less powerful than T7 grain for grain.  Normally the conservative number is 15% less pressure and a reduction of velocity.

I shot RS for years. I had good luck with it but it will foul your gun way quicker the t7. It is a very dirty powder.

Is it Pyrodex we're talking about?

The place I went to had T7 in 3f not 2f but had the Hodgdon Pyrodex RS as a 2f equivalent. As per my MO I bought it and asked questions later. I was going to try to find a load for my Knight Bighorn. So far I have been shooting pellets and wanted to try something that wasn't 100 or 150 gr. of powder. I have to say I did go to the range today and shot consistent 2.5" groupings at 50 yrds. with two Pyrodex pellets and a 250 gr. bullet. Later went to 100 yrds and had 6" grouping with a different brand and weight of bullet but I think I was having some fouling issues by that point. Only second time shooting at targets with the rifle and first time shooting peep sights, ever. I think I'm doing ok.

It's going to take a little bit longer than I thought to play around with the different powders, loads and bullets out there.

Thanks for the responses!

This is just me.... but I really do prefer T7-3f in my percussion cap rifles.  It burns a bit cleaner and ignites easier.  I do use T7-3f in any rifle that I use 209 ignition.

I shoot 110 grs. of 3f in my MK-85's and the Knight ULite that I use for ML hunting

Using RWS 1081 primers. The owners manual for the rifle recommends 2f but real world experiences are more valuable info!
