if I were a young man still in school I'd opt for a NEF .223 buy a set of dies and learn to reload. thats if you want a dedicated coyote rifle. If you want a rifle to hunt coyotes and deer I'd buy a .243 bolt gun (dosent matter which one there all good)
nuke the gray whales for jesus!

Alot depends on the type of coyote hunting you'll be doing.  Spot and shoot, calling?  Also the terrain you plan to hunt, eastside open country, thick sage or westside forest or clearcuts.  For calling in tight cover I like a short fast handling rifle with a low power variable 1x4 or 1.5x6 or even a shotgun.  For more open country a 24" barrelled sporter weight barrelled bolt action with a 2x10, 3x9.  I have my favorite calibers but anything from 204 Ruger to 25-06 will do the trick.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

There are a couple of good threads on here with alot of info pertaining to this subject.
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.

Whats you price range? AR-15 with a 16" barrle is a great gun for the tight brush and the open, a bolt gun works too. Its all up to you what feels right to you and what you have to spend.
