Subsonic hunting bullets for the 300 BLK ??
« on: June 22, 2016, 07:26:21 AM »
I’m not seeing much in the way of hunting bullets offered in over the counter subsonic loadings.  Mostly Hornady  A Max, or OTM bullets in the 200g – 220g, none of which is recommended as a hunting load.

Anyone have any suggestions?

This.

300 sub is tricky to hunt with as velocities won't open up most bullet designs. I bought a mold just specifically to modify by adding a big hollow point but alas.... just another in a long string of incomplete projects!   :chuckle:

Thanks I found the Lehigh, and a Nosler bullet loaded by Noveske.  But at $40 - $50 a box I’ll probably end up putting something together myself.  At 1000ish fps I’m thinking all lead is going to be as good as anything else.

I've run this mold http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/10055.  It works well right at/under MOA.  We run them with AA#9 powder.

* Edit to add,  You might be able to find a retailer selling similar size/weight bullets for sale.

Don't waste your money with the Nosler/Noveske load; that bullet is known to perform poorly for hunting.

That last sentence is not accurate at all. There is a huge difference in performance of specialized subsonic bullets vs everything else, whether you're talking cast or jacketed. I say that based on a LOT of testing with the 300.

What's the appeal of a subsonic big game round?

I developed my own cast hollow point. That's one advantage of having a machine shop at home.

If I wasn't casting my own, or commercial molds were my only cast bullet options, I'd be using the 194gr Lehigh, no question.
