Stand vs Still for Roosevelt
« on: July 10, 2016, 04:17:26 PM »
I'm new to WA and hunting elk.  I seem to not be able to find anywhere to spot and stalk, it's so thick here in Western WA. Even if I find a high point everywhere it over looks is thick trees.  What works better, hunting them like white tails and setting a stand/blind or still hunting the timber?

BOTH...
Stand hunting works if you know a travel corridor, or active trail.
You find these by spotting elk, then figuring out how they got there, why they got there, and when they will be there.
Then hang the stand and sit in it until you see the elk, climb down and stalk them because they probably will be somewhere else... :)

JT, welcome to WA and hunting elk. You'll find a lot of information on this site. If you'd like to learn about elk and elk hunting from an experienced dude who's put his knowledge into a well organized and comprehensive course, check out Elk101 University. You can use the code gritty40 to get the cost reduced. I purchased it recently and it's worth every penny.
you could also check out the information on the Elknut site as well. I think he's a sponsor on this site too.

Good luck!

Base your choice on your preference. Both will work.  If you can't sit still for very long go looking around then sit some more. Whatever will keep you in the field. As long as your hunting what else matters.

Both. But I wouldn't chain myself to a tree for a week solid like you was WTS hunting.  Watching smoking hot w allows during the 11-2:30 shift is good. Or if you need a say to rest and recover.
