What do you guys do with used cooking oil?
« on: July 27, 2016, 10:37:22 AM »
We just bought a deep fryer, used it last night for our bottom fish.  I've heard not to cook anything else in that oil once it's used for fish, is the oil still good to use later?  How do you store it, should I run it through a coffee filter and put it back in the jug? Does it need refrigerated now??  Thanks, by the way, it is canola oil.

Run it in your diesel.

 :chuckle:

I think whatever you cook in it will taste like fish now, that's why they say don't reuse it.

Yep use used fish cooking oil for fish. I put it back in the jug and back onto the shop shelf it goes.  Gots oil for fish, turkeys and clean oil for tators and other stuff. There is some nice oil filtration gadjets you can get.

Saw a tv show recently that had a restaurant that was known for using the same oil in their deep fryer for like 75 years or something crazy like that.  So I'll just pour it back in the jug and mark FISH on it then, thanks guys.  Sure was nice cooking that stuff outside instead of in the house, should have bought a deep fryer a long time ago.

Cooking oil does go rancid over time.  If stored clean and cool it may be a long time.  It does pick up flavors and break down to trans fats with high heat.  It makes great animal feed if used properly, it has more than two times the calories of starch.  Most cultures turn hand springs to get a little fat, they need the calories, ours not so much.  If it passes the smell test you are usually good to fry away.

I'll only reuse it once or twice and yes, fish only in fish grease.  I'll strain it and see how nasty it smells.  If it passes the sniff test, in the fridge it goes.  If not, it gets "discarded".

So, follow the scent of french fries to your camp?  :chuckle: just kidding. Does that help for the skeeters?

Haha! Yup!  I haven't noticed a change in mosquitos but it's been great for camping... contained fire and puts out a lot of heat.

I thought about an oil burner for a wall tent stove.  Anybody do this?

My brother did a waste oil drip system for a shop Woodstock. The main problem is how hot it got and the difficulty in regulating the drip. As the oil thins out it flows quicker and needs very refined valves. He used a peacock valve from a radiator and it didn't have precise small flow. Additionally his shop stove was a huge pipe that was roughly 28" ID and 30+" long. The steel was half inch thick and he could get it glowing red. Not sure how a camp stove could not burn you out of the tend or last very long.

I use oil a few times before it needs to get tossed and it also depends on how long its been since I used it. If I haven't deepfried in a while I ll toss the old stuff and use fresh. I store my old oil in containers till we have a fire then burn it.

I reuse mine, leave it in the fryer, try to filter it every now and then.  I've never noticed a fishy taste transferred to other things that I fry in it.  I'll use fresh if I am doing pastries or something like that.  I cover it hot so it stays sterile, never had any go rancid.   :twocents:
