you could always go the cast bullet route with this gun.

They're good for elk in Norway.
Or moose. Whatever. Same difference.

Bullets go to slow out of that thing for anything but ground squirrels. A bullet from that would merely bounce off a deer.

I have one... Picked it up used at Cabelas for $399 with a VariX-III on it... old post '64 model 70.  Its heavy and my favorite bear gun now.  I'd love to smack and elk with it just to see.  I'm a little afraid of what it might do to a deer, but not too afraid to give it a shot if I hunt rifle this year.

I run the 300 grain przi rounds.  They're cheapest, pattern well for me, and at 300 grains its hard to go wrong.  Shoots a similar trajectory to a .30-06... but with a cannonball.

They are really actually good for deer. Big heavy slower moving bullet... The bullets are tough as well so not a lot of meat damage. I shot a mule deer with mine a couple years ago. But it was a head shot so same results as most rifles.  :chuckle:

 :yeah:
the guys I know that use them like them, say there is very little meat damage...kind of like how little damage from a .45-70 Gov't.  The bullets are usually pretty solid and aren't hyper velocity, so they just kind of plow through and don't have to expand and shatter/liquefy internals.  The one guy said it does less damage than his 7mm Rem Mag.

When I was in my teens I worked for a wheat farmer that harvested about 10K acres on rotation.  He hunted in places I can't even pronounce and hunted stuff I'd never heard of.  Money was of little concern and he could easily afford any rifle he wanted.  He hunted/shot everything with this old Pre 64 model 70 375 H&H.  I think he practically wore out the mounting screws because he was always putting the latest greatest high dollar German scope on it but from coyotes to African Plains animals all he ever used was a 375 H&H and you better not say a word negative about it one or you'd have been looking for a new job.  It was kind of a running joke that he loved that gun so much he was going to be buried with it but I later learned it wasn't a joke.

Holland & Holland practically has a cult following and it doesn't seem to matter which cartridge it is, if their barrel is stamped H&H, nothing else matters.
