Montana antelope unit 215
« on: August 05, 2016, 10:28:34 PM »
So I put in for this hunt with 1 point hoping I would just build points this year. Well as my luck would have it, I got drawn for it. I really kind of feel bad because I don't even know where to begin in this unit. Does anyone have any knowledge they'd be willing to share?

Thank you

Sucks in Montana you can't just put in a ghost point option. Might want to look on Monster Muleys or Hunttalk and do a search on the antelope or Montana forums. Probably our best bet. Good luck. Wish I could draw a Mt lope tag.

Take a drive over and scout it!   :)

There is some public land, the Spotted Dog WMA and Warm Springs WMA.  Heck, a lot of it you could glass from the freeway.  Go stay at Fairmont Hot Springs while you're at it.

Good luck.

Thought I would respond since I am from a Montana transplant.  I looked at the regs and noted only twenty five permits for this unit.  What great luck to draw.  I see antelope off of I-90 when I am driving to see my relatives both before and after Butte.  Some bucks look like they have some mighty black horns.  The previous poster has the right idea, sounds like a great scouting trip if you can afford the time.

I'm going to try to head over for a day or 2 in a couple weeks. I'm thinking I'll have to try to secure private land access though.

You are really over thinking it man.  Antelope are not hard to find or kill.  Get an OnX chip, and cover ground. You will find goats

Shouldn't you be looking for elk?

ive got a Montana chip. The unit just isn't very big and the vast majority of the public land in the unit is more elk country than antelope country. I only put in for it because it had the toughest draw odds and Montana doesn't have a ghost point option. But I hear there are some good goats in the unit so I gotta try. I probably couldn't draw it if I actually wanted it haha

You probably won't have too much difficulty getting access to private land for antelope.  Deer will be a different situation.
Also, check Montana's Block Management.  These are landowners that allow access to their land and get a small reimbursement from the state.  Some allow you to walk on and hunt, others are by reservation.

you'll be fine dude.  Between BLM, BMA, and some good old fashioned door knocking, you'll have plenty of dirt.

Not sure about that specific unit but you may want to look and see if there is any restricted BMA land.  We hunted a big ranch a few years ago that was by registration only and it was pretty good hunting.

If memory serves me right, I think there is a little bit of BMA ground, but not much.  The ranches that will likely hold antelope are pretty decent sized, so you don't have to worry about knocking on a lot of doors, just a few.

I'd wait until the second week of the season, then go.  Let the dust settle and let the goats redistribute from the opening day soirée.
