He who cannot be hunted
« on: August 10, 2016, 04:55:11 PM »
Columbian Whitetail Deer at the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge near Cathlamet a couple of days ago.  He's got pretty decent brown tines for a forkie.  The big boys will come out and play for the camera in about three months.

(yes, I'm bored, watching the Olympics and waiting for hunting season).

That deadhead appears to be a CWT for sure.

I remember back in the mid 80s when you could drive the loop and see 50 or 60 bucks and 150 or more total deer. Plus a couple herds of elk with some dandy bulls. Always liked going through there on the way to and from Ilwaco!

Here's a super forky I took a picture of on the refuge back in August 2007. Kinda sucks you can't drive the loop anymore, but lately I've been seeing quite a few bigger bucks on the island.

Not the best picture but I posted this earlier this year. This was this winter and unfortunately for me my camera battery died before I could snap more. This is it zoomed in. It's a 4x4 with about 4-5in eyeguards and a dropper on the LH side. Best buck I have ever seen in there and definitely wasnt expecting to see one of that caliber in there.

Yeah, I saw that guy too.  He's a stud alright.

Running these guys down in a rig and claiming the road kill is illegal too.   Geeze, just can't win.  :chuckle:

A few more from yesterday - This guy was hanging out with a spike.  Inbreeding in that small population of deer may have clouded his genetic pool a bit (?).  It may just be the forked brow tine makes the set-up hard to decipher.
