A Homer man shot and killed a charging sow brown bear at Humpy Creek last Friday. Kim Woodman, 57, shot the bear five times with a 10mm handgun before the bear fell about 6 feet from him. While backing away from the sow, Woodman fell and accidentally shot himself in the left foot . . .

I've always thought a G20 10mm with 15rnd mag would be a pretty good choice for bear protection.  Recoil is pretty manageable and whether you like Glocks or not, they always seem to go bang when you pull the trigger.

My favorite would still be a G21 with 460 Rowland kit, 13+1 with nearly equal power of a 44mag.

Glad it all work out for the guy and even though he shot his own foot, which sucks, it sure could have been a lot worse.

I know there's no way to know, but any guess what his heart rate spiked to in a matter of seconds???

if someone didn't know better they could back pedal and stumble easy and bam them feet come right up in the line of fire.  ouch!

A lone female grizzly bear reportedly surprised a man hunting elk at Big Creek north of Gardiner on Oct. 28. The hunter reported to Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks that he came upon the bear feeding on a carcass in the brush and that the bear charged him. The hunter said he first used bear spray to deter the attack then shot the bear in self defense.

The second incident was reported on Oct. 31 by a group of elk hunters who said they came upon and surprised a female grizzly bear with two young bears at Johnson Lake near West Yellowstone. The hunters said they first used bear spray on the charging bear but, as the bear continued to approach, they reportedly shot the bear in self defense.

You can find a lot of support in using bear spray vs bullets, thing is most bears that are charging don't need shot but spraying would be a good idea to teach them humans are like skunks..but if you find one of those rare bears that isn't bluffing then bear spray is a weak defense at best for a determined bear.

I do not like magnum hand guns, not at all. But were I to go back to Alaska again and carried a handgun for defense, it would be a min 41 mag and I'd even give some though to a 460. People shooting less are playing with fire! Lady a year or so ago up there killed one with a 38 Spec.

Lucky. I had a colt 10mm delta elite that really liked to jam. Sold it and got a the SW airlite 44 mag.
