Bear Down, How Long Before Another One Moves In
« on: August 22, 2016, 09:53:44 AM »
So I found a new spot for bears as my other one wasnt producing any sign, a fellow co-worker asked if he could tag along (he hasnt shot a bear in 7yrs, mostly just deer hunts) while I went to explore Saturday. A nice spot good amount of decent clear cuts with good sign. As I was working down a logging spur I spotted one about 350yds working in and out of the brush, never got a good shot at him. My buddy was working a parellel spur and after 2 hours or so I heard a shot, lucky son of gun got a bear. I was super happy for him, not a big bear but put a big smile on his face. After looking at google earth it was likely the same bear as he was working back to where we split up and it was only about 600yds through the timber from where I spotted it a couple hours earlier. So for the question, there are multiple clear cuts within the same general area about 1/2 - 3/4 mile away. Given the amount of scat laying around there is likely more than 1 bear in the area, how long should I give the area to "cool" down and what are everyone's thoughts on concentrating where this bear was or should I fan out a bit?

Lots of sign, lots of cuts, hunt it all you want. I don't think bears in the area care about the gun shot one bit. To them, it is just another noise and nothing happened to them so just keep eating. I have watched elk browse and not care one bit about people target shooting just over a ridge. You could fan out and explore some more, but with all the sign  (food water cover area), you are sitting pretty.
If you hunt the area a few more times and the fresh sign has disappeared (only seeing piles of the older scat) you might move on, or at least try a different area close by.
Go get em. IMHO
