Tips and hints.
« on: August 29, 2016, 03:15:06 PM »
Went out to kill some dogs last weekend and called in two all i had was a twenty two, but looks like its gonna make for a great stand anyone else getting ready to chase dogs? Would love to hunt dogs with a veteran Yote hunter. I have been hunting them 3 years now and ive only shot one dog. Any advice or tips would be great.

tips

!.  Be aware of the wind/breeze and use it to keep your scent away from a coyotes nose.

2.  Stealthy approach to your intended stand, a coyote can hear you from a long way off.

3.  Stay as still as possible on the stand, fooling with gear, adjusting  power/turrets on the scope and scanning with your scope or binos will cost you coyotes.

4.  Learn from each stand, after the stand is finished walk around and see if there is a better place to sit or a better way to hunt it if there is a different wind.

5.  Scouting can help you put a lot more fur on the stretchers.  When I'm hunting alone I do a few stands in the morning and spend most of the rest of the day scouting only doing a stand if it yells to me " HUNT HERE ".  Then I have places to hunt the next morning.
After doing this for many years I like cold calling new areas.  When you get some years of experience it gets easier to see good areas just driving past.

Enjoy
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

One thing I've learned by mistake is:

IF you think you have sat long enough and ready to split....sit another 15 minutes scanning.  Have been busted a few times with dogs sitting in a thicket watching not wanting to commit to the call fully.

Forgot most of what I used to know,Rule number one, Stay still, If a stand doesnt feel right dont call it .AWS gave you some good tips, Make use of them. Make as many stands as you can in a day, Odds are better that way.Get in and out of a stand like a Coyote would use all the cover and low ground to your advantage.Sun @ your back always.Cover larger then you behind you, make sure your not making contact with vegetation behind you as it will move if you do . Seek a high point for a better ability to see down into the area you are calling, Or when calling to a high area ( calling them down) make sure you shoot them before they get down to your level. Use sounds others are not, They all work.Dont set up with vegetation blocking your view, If your in thick cover make sure you have CLEAR shooting lanes in front of you.If a coyote comes in and you want to stop it BARK at it, BUT be ready to shoot within a second or two, thats all youll usually get ,I could go on for a hour or better , Or come see one of my seminars this fall, Thats the easiest way to pick my brain LOL. Good luck, Hunt hard and often.
