Shed dog questions: renting, cross-training
« on: September 03, 2016, 05:52:29 PM »
I'm looking for input from other shed dog owners/trainers on a few questions I have. I own a 1/yr shed dog. She has proven herself to be an excellent shed hunter, loves being in the forest and using her nose. But because I don't get out very often myself, I've been thinking about a few things I could do so she gets more work.

One, renting her out. Does anyone have experience with renting a shed dog, either to or from someone? Good idea, bad idea?

Two, cross-training for tracking. I know a lot of shed dogs are also trained for bird hunting, but what about other scent work, like scent detection or tracking humans? I don't see a problem with this is scent distinction is taught, but I'd like to hear any first hand experience.
