Backcountry GMUs 335/249 in mod firearm Oct
« on: September 18, 2016, 09:41:08 AM »
Hey all, I am a noob here and a noob hunter to WA. I am planning on a 4-5 day backcountry to these GMUs as a season opener for deer/bear. It will likely just be a scout trip, but am thinking of going up to the spectacular lake, park lakes, glacier lake and caches ridge line via frenchmen's cabin. I hear the little kachess lake area has nice buck if you can find them, and last year ran into a hunter who took down a nice bear around here (red mountain).
Any thoughts here or areas that are just too difficult with outdoorsy weekend warriors with kids?
I am really looking forward to getting further out and further backcountry a little later in the season as well. I am excited there is a thread for backcountry guys/ladies here.

The country you are describing is pretty rough country and you mentioned "areas too difficult for weekend warriors with kids." Fairly low deer densities in 249 and 335 in those areas are pretty similar. Is it a great backcountry area? Yes...it's beautiful country through there just not the easiest to hunt let alone pack something out if you're successful. Just realize that if you hunt it that late in the year it also tends to be pretty wet and pack accordingly if you're hunting mid October on.

Hmm, okay, thanks for your feedback and insights. It sounds just about right based on my topos . Rugged country is my favorite! Thanks for the fair warning. Cheers!
