First year in ID
« on: October 23, 2016, 09:44:30 AM »
Well this was our first year hunting in Idaho and it couldn't have gone better!  We went 2/2 on bulls including both of our first bulls, as well as my dads first elk.  I have been fortunate enough to tag a few cows over the last 5 years or so but never had a chance at a bull(other than the one I shot at and missed about 5 years ago). I shot the 7x7 opening morning and my dad shot the tall spike on that next Thursday.

Nice bull!  That looks like great success.  I'm starting to research Idaho elk for 2017, do you have any suggestions on resources for picking an area and understanding their tags?  My friend and I have been putting in for everything in WA for 10+ years, but out of state is new to us and I'm just not sure what I should be reading.  I'm starting with the 10 year Elk Management Plan (180 pages...) to get background info but would love to hear how you focused in on an area.  Thanks

Thanks everybody it was a lot of fun and a great year.

As far as where to start researching, I started on the IDFG website. I used their mapping program and the harvest stats on their website. One of the reasons I picked the unit I did was because of their longer any weapon season. My suggestion is to first figure out what weapon you want to use.  Their seasons are much more generous than what we have here in WA, for the most part at least.  Their muzzle loader only season isn't very long compared to the other seasons and in some cases isn't much longer than ours here in WA and they have slightly different requirements last I checked.

Looks like Panhandle (wet). Damn good first bull. Congrats. I'm thinking about hitting the St. Joe or Southern ID next year for the archery season.

We were actually a little farther south than the Panhandle but it did rain for most of the week.

Remember our first Idaho Hunt like it was yesterday and it was 10 years ago. Congrats on the kills. What weapon did you use?
