Eastern Washington Ducks and Geese info?
« on: October 24, 2016, 03:33:22 PM »
Usually hunt most of my waterfowl on the Westside, but since I didn't try over here last year cause I was in the dorms and I'm over at WSU for 3 more years thought I might want to get some info on how it works over here! Currently residing in Pullman and am trying to figure out the type of areas available. I know there are a crap ton of fields but don't know if they get much action. The Snake River is also pretty close but have no dog or boat currently so only have my waders . Also, what are the best methods for blinds? layout or just something rigged up with some sticks and netting? Are decoys effective or is mostly just pass shooting? pretty much any info would be helpful since I'm a little out of my comfort zone over here! Any Whitman County Specific information welcome as well!

The Eastern portion of the county doesn't see a whole lot of migration action.  If you can secure access to private land along the Palouse river or its two forks you can do fairly well jump shooting birds.  You will mostly see ducks and a few flocks of geese especially early in the season until the lakes up north start to freeze over.  Then the geese numbers tend to pick up a little.  It seems like a lo The Western side of the county seems to have a little more migration activity.  But it is almost all private and securing permission may be difficult.  The Snake River will have the highest concentration of birds and also the highest concentration of accessible lands, but as you said without a good dog or boat its almost impossible to hunt unless you like training for the polar bear plunge  :chuckle:.

One thing to try if you don't have a boat or dog is a fishing rod and a floating bass plug.  I've retrieved ducks with a plug.

Geese tend to loaf on the river. In the morning when they decide to leave and head to the fields they often times just clear the breaks and are within easy range and fall on dry land. Find the X where they are clearing the breaks and pass shooting can be a blast. Go Cougs!
