Jakelands 2016 blacktail hunts
« on: November 08, 2016, 10:01:14 PM »
Finally getting to posting the season up
Opening morning comes and by 5:30 AM I'm 5 miles in and in a spot ready to start it off. As it starts getting light out I'm spotting deer way below me I notice 2 bucks working up a steep draw of timber about 500 yards away the buck in the lead was a solid 4x4 and the buck that was following was a 3x3 game on !
I get to where I know they're going cross a old road and I get set up and wait and range it at 210 yards. The whole time the 4x4 was in the lead so as I see him start to come up through the thick brush and he starts raking the trees his horns flashing in the limbs I get a open shot and pull the trigger ! He does a 180 and drops lights out !!!
I worked my way down to him and get in the brush and realized I made a rookie mistake... I shot the 3x3  the big boy let junior go first across the old road.

I'm happy but bummed my season is over because I wait all year to hunt blacktails

Well it wasn't over !!! The next week my girlfriends sister asks if I could help her get a blacktail! Heck ya ! So we decide on the 26th and if all else fails the 30th
She meets at the house at about 4:00 we peddle in about 4.5 miles and ditch the bikes get the packs on and start working up the mountain by headlamp and after about 3/4 of a mile we are in the deer we can see their eyes and better yet smell musky buck. So we decide to back down a little ways and hold tight until it's light out.
It gets light out enough to start hunt so we work our way up through the cut and get up on a old road where we spot a doe right off. By this time the rain and the wind is just coming in hard I decide to work up through the next cut about 50 yards from the edge of some 10-12 year old cut and we spot 3 does cutting across towards the top.
We start to walk around a big slash pile and we could smell rutty buck just as he jumps up and hauls butt about 150 yards straight up the cut I get him to stop for about 1 second and he turns and takes off again I yell and he stops and turns broadside about 200 yards up in between 2 big stumps !!
She drops him on the spot with 1 he'll of a shot in the middle of a storm !!
We get up there and it's high fives and smiles . Her first blacktail !!! One of the oldest blacktails I've ever seen

Oh ya he only had 1 toof in his head

She is super happy with her buck and it was a fun hunt and alot of work to get him down off the mountain

Well Thursday the 27th comes and I'm back up on the mountain with my buddies son to try and help him get his 1st buck !!
We worked all day in perfect conditions to see NOTHING!! So I took him up into a hole that always has bucks in at about 1:30 and we settle in to wait . There was no wait at about 280 yards down at the edge of the bowl is brute just ripping up a tree !! Joe is trying to get on him when for no other reason he decides to stop and step into the thick timber to not be seen again bummer !!
Well we get setup and wait and wait until almost 5:00 I look across on a bench and there's a completely different buck starring at us at 150 yards away but Joe couldn't see him because of the angle and he sneaks out
Well I gets dark and we head down the mountain with a game plan for Friday!

Friday morning comes and we are back up in there at first light ! We spot 2 Does right away and then a 3rd walking away and it was a forky Joe ranges him at 180 yards and drops him with one nice shot !!!

It was a great year hunting!!!

Nice pics to go with the story.  You had another great season despite falling for the bait and switch the bucks pulled on you.  Congrats again.  Thanks for sharing.

Looks like a good hunt. Some nice bucks taken up in that area.

I'm looking forward to it!  I know, from years of experience, that deer don't show up when expected!  I learned a lot and saw some great views, and that's what's important!

Some great blacktail bucks. The old one is cool with only one tooth. That would be a fantastic European mount! Way to go and congradulations on a memorable deer season. Lots of great eating and great pictures of fond hunts past.
