Whether elk hunting with stick and string, smoke pole, modern, or javelin, what seemed to work best for you/your crew this year that resulted in the best close encounters/shot opportunities (whether or not you harvested an elk)?

Spot and Stalk. In heavy timber, very slow and as quiet as possible. In open country, one hour of glassing is worth several hour of hiking.

Stick and string archery, calling was the most productive this year. Nothing down, but lots of action with good calling setups and vocal elk. If the elk are silent though, you are stuck with one of the other methods...

Calling netted us 0 opportunities this year which was really disappointing. Spot and stalk gave us one chance during archery.

Both my bulls out of state were spot and stalk. Or at least spot and shoot
. Buddy called in his bull, with a mix of cow calls and bugles. Had a couple good call ins but was hoping for " the big one" and passed on shooting. Calling this year was tough, due to the elk movement and patterns rather than lack of vocal elk. However, It was my first year of 100 percent call in success, only had a select few setups, but of those every one resulted in elk that could/should have been shot. Haven't hunted elk for myself in Washington yet.

Absolutely nothing worked this year. First time in 10 years of hunting archery in WA that had zero responses to calling over two weeks. Going to Idaho next year
