what would you think?
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:20:37 PM »
So my buddy drew an anterless tag for general season Eastside rifle  tag. He filled his tag on the second day that the cow season opened. There were 3 of us who went on the hunt, one tag holder and 2 helpers.  One of the helpers went back to camp after the cow was shot to pick up the truck and get closer to the elk to load it up.
When he got back to camp ( about a mile and a half) there was some guy who pulled up to our camp and unloaded a mulie doe that was supposedly hit by a vehicle.  He proceeded to hang and skin the deer in our camp. The thing is there is no deer season in our unit except for 5 special draw permits for 3 pt or better. My buddy drove off to meet us so we could pack out my other buddys elk. After we got the elk out and back to our camp that same guy was still parked in our camp and had his doe hanging in our camp.
We told this guy to get his deer out of our camp because we dont want any issues with wardens or being responsible for a doe. He got all offended and tried to argue with us. The thing is he left this deer hanging and drove off and told us if the wardens stop by just tell them that it was a road kill deer and the guy who claimed it will be back in a little bit. This guy knew the people in the camp from across from us. It just seems weird that a guy would stop at some random camp and hang an out of season deer in a camp that you don't know anyone there.
The worst part is he broke our meat pole so we had to move our elk to another tree to hang it. Have you ever heard of someone who would think this is ok? He seemed like this was perfectly fine. Our party thought this was totally crazy.I don't know anyone who would think this was acceptable. Just wondering what you guys think about this?

I think he was trying to get you guys to vacate your camp.  I would have taken pictures of him, his vehicle, the deer, and called the game warden.

No, I have never heard of someone who would intrude into someone else's camp like that. That's bizarre and it got me thinking about the legality of such an act. And that's just it, what he did was not illegal. If it was public land then he could cozy right up and there may be nothing you could do about it unless he was harassing or doing some other act that you could call the police for. I agree with the other comment that he may have been trying to force you out.

There's nothing illegal on what he did of he in fact picked up the road kill. I could legally set up camp right beside yours if I wanted to. I can walk right through your camp on public land and it isn't against the law. That's public land for you.

If you bring a warden into the situation the burden of proof will be determined by the warden. Considering the authority of a warden this has the potential to get ugly quickly for those involved. In other words if he thinks the deer was poached, he can write a ticket and someone will have to prove in court it was a road kill, which will require a lawyer. I agree with the OP hanging a deer with no tag in someone else's camp is a bad idea, and I would have contacted a warden to let him know whats going on.

I'd have taken a picture of the guy, his truck (with lic plate#), and the deer then called the F&G. The guy was obviously not the brightest bulb in the shed, so there's no way I would have let the deer hang in my camp leaving me responsible for his possible illegal activities.

That's just plain weird. Salvaging a road kill should mean you take it home immediately and process it, guts and all. I guess if you're camping away from home it's quite the dilemma, but I'm not sure I'd want to pick up a road kill and hang it up in a hunting camp, especially when it's a deer and deer season is closed. Just that is odd but the fact that this guy nonchalantly hung it in your camp without any kind of explanation as to why he would do such a thing, is beyond strange. I would have probably called a game warden and asked him to investigate.

Cut his animal down put it in the back of his truck and said "see ya". 3 against 1 what's he gonna do?

If the guy is acting that weird I wouldn't escalate unless I absolutely had to. Remember, he's on public land.

We ended up doing this. Then he parked his truck in front of our camp and watched us skin and take care of the elk. He said he was waiting for his daughter to finish her hunt. Never saw his daughter. With all the places to wait it just had to be our camp. I was just seeing if other people thought this was weird because it blew our minds.

Ya super weird. Way too many dip tards out there.
He didn't want that deer associated with him until he was ready to leave with it = poached.
And given my recent wdfw experience, I'd almost be afraid to call them as to get blamed for it.

As long as you had a salvage permit filed, I would hang it in camp, someone on hear did it this year and posted about in a thread.

This is Hunt-WA after all. You gotta hang the guy from the meat pole by his nut sack, reach into his chest and yank out his heart, and show it to him while it's still beating!

Brings up some interesting questions, it's public land where does "your camp" end?  If he is acting weird and not dangerous how does the law view that?  Do it wrong and you could have someone calling you big momma. :yike:

sounds like the Colockum, saw all kinds of nut cases in there last year, several had their guns taken away by the wardens and still were poking around in other peoples camps and freaking people out, saw two huge 6 and 7 point elk in the back of the game wardens trucks too.

Strange for sure and very impolite.  I would have texted that one in and suggested the warden wait one day to see if he even pulled the online permit for a roadkill deer.  I would guess it would be pretty easy to look at a skinned deer and have a 90% chance of telling if it died by bullet or bumper.

That was me.  I still dont see a problem with hanging my deer there.  That hanging pole was a lot nicer than the back of my truck.

FYI - Im just kidding, that sort of thing wouldn't fly in our camp.

That is odd like everyone else said, but if that was my camp, I am pretty sure backstraps would have been served for dinner that night
