pheasant release
«

I'm still debating whether or not to hunt the pen raised pheasants that are released here in West Wash. The only reason would be to give my 6 month Lab some experience.
What bothers me the most is the possability of my dog or I getting BB's under our hide or eyes. And the "fair chase thing" kind of bothers me too
.
Well if I can make up my mind to do it,Do any of you know the release days?? thanx

If you go in the afternoons, or even anytime after about 10 a.m. it's not too bad. Even then, you're not hunting wild birds, but still, it's good experience for a young dog. My golden retriever taught herself how to hunt at the Scatter Creek release site, about 14 years ago. They generally release birds Friday evening, Saturday evening, and I believe Wednesday evenings. You can count on the weekend releases, but I think mid-week may be sporadic, depending on how popular the site is.

take your dog, get him some excersize and don;t worry about the fair chase thing. these are pen raised birds raised to be shot by us hunters. thats what they are there for. they are not produced to re-stock western washington with pheasants, and you will not have a true pheasant hunting experience, but your dog will love it.
if you want to escape the crowds, jump in your rig and look at the more out-lying release sites.
we used to hunt ebey prairie release site, and there were times when nobody was there. never had issues. the guy used to release birds up there about 7:00-7:30 am saturdays and sundays, and you could start hunting at 8:00. they released birds every day on the weekends during season and als on wednesdays if i remember correctly.
we did those hunts strictly for the dogs because it's fun for me to watch them work, thats all.

Stanwood? They release on Tuesday night, Friday night and Saturday night. Then they empty all the remaining birds the evening before Thanksgiving. Wear armor.

I just went back and read my post. I said they release birds on Wednesday evening...that should have been Tuesday evening.

Well I asked my 6 month old lab if he wanted to hunt pen raised roosters and his tail told me hell yes! So we are going to give it a try.I checked all the local sporting goods stores for orange Kevlar without success tho, lol.
