The Grand's came with a V in front of the 6 though, correct? I thought the inline's went out soon following the AMC acquisition?

I had a 95 Tacoma 4 banger which was recalled because of a frame corrosion issue around '07 or so in New England. I believe it had about 125K miles on it? They "took" it from me for $8,000 which, at the time, I thought was a great offer. What a great little rig that was for a 21 year old stationed at Bragg. I took that thing as deep into the Appalachian's as you could go.

I want to get rid of the Grand Cherokee Laredo before it costs me any more money and was thinking about a Tacoma with a full bed, probably 2010-2012. What do you guys think of them and do you have other suggestions for a truck I could buy in the $14-18K range?

I want the pick up to be 4WD and have a good-sized bed for hauling yard debris, gravel, mulch, etc.

LOVE my Tacoma. I bought it with 55k for 13,500. Completely clean title.

2007 access cab 4x4 sr5 manual transmission.
3 inch lift and 33 inch tires.

Found a guy who was desperate. Wanted 18,500 and I low balled him and he took it. Deals are out there. I have 140,000 on it now and it's been great. I did the U JOINTS and wheel bearings but probably didn't HAVE to. Just did it.

What a steal. I'm looking for one now as well. My wife got me to buy a stupid 2000 expedition about 2 years ago and it's just under 300,000 miles and it has way too many problems to list after I got it fix 3-4 times.

The Tacomas are great trucks but recently there have been reports of premature frame rusting on a couple of years.
there was a letter sent out recently about that, take it to any dealer and they will be covering a rental while they inspect and repair the frame. Toyota Tacoma's have the strongest running gear you'll find in that class of pickup. PLUS you can get them in a 6 Spd Manual with a 300HP V6
You sure about that?
well if you really need me to Ill take a picture of the card I got in the mail and post it on the forum....

I just called Toyota last week for a frame inspection on my 2006 Tacoma.
They said the frame inspection expired LAST MARCH and told me to suck it.
Do a search on this forum for my experience with the leaf spring recall.

My 95 Grand  Cherokee was an awesome rig with solid axles, inline 6cyl and a much more advanced 4wd system than what you can get on a Toyota today.
All it needed was basic maintenance and an ac condenser which Jeep was happy to warranty.
I replaced the original battery at 112k miles before I sold it to my BIL.
Great rigs.

Grand Cherokee didn't have a v6 until 2005 with the WK body style and the 3.7L v6. Up till then, the 6 cylinder engine was a mostly bombproof inline 4.0L.

Great rigs.
I made lots of mortgage payments selling service and repairs on Grand Cherokees. I love them too.
I still drive one and mine has been a mostly great vehicle. Just replaced the a/c condenser/transmission cooler on it because it was leaking transmission fluid at 160k. I'm on my 3rd battery and I replaced brakes a few times per axle now.

Lots of good infor, thanks gang. I'll be sure to have the rame checked out. as far as the 6 cyl being bomb-proof, I must've got a lemon. I've done so many repairs on this thing it's not funny. Been trouble-free for a few years but I can feel the driver's seat starting to stretch back. I need a new rig.

Remember, I said bombproof engine, not bombproof rest of the car. Surprised you haven't had differential issues. That was the big money ticket on those rigs. I've run many, many Grand Cherokees through the shop and had very, very few 4.0 engine issues. Cracked exhaust manifolds and valve covers leaking oil were the only consistent issues, and technically, only one of those is specifically an engine issue.
I don't think you can go wrong with a Tacoma. I don't think I'd ever buy one because they're not comfortable to me...but I really only like full sized rigs. Their repair history is confidence building for sure.

I got the card, too...Toyota told me to suck it when I reported the sagging leafs in 2010('We don't make cars that have sagging leafs') so I replaced the rear suspension out of pocket and now when I express concerns over my frame, which is a known issue, Toyota says 'If you want to do something about it, file a class action lawsuit against a multi-national conglomerate with deep pockets and a legal team on staff'.

So now we are blessing a car that lacks a suitable frame and rear springs?
I must be really confused about the expectations for a 'truck'.

Looks like you had till 3/31/16 to have it inspected. They released that 3/20/2015. You had a year.

My next door neighbor has an 2011 4 door TRD Taco, beautiful rig, except the shot Leaf springs and his front disk rotor assemblies have warped.
I thought they got rid of that problem  back in the early 90s?
He put a small bucket of "crusher-run" in the back, by the time he drove the mile home his nose was pointing up. He took it in and they replaced the shot leafs with the same stock leafs. Not a month later the same thing happened (did not ask what he was carrying this time) Toyota told him to pack sand.
I used my lowly 2007 Dakota with a 3.7 to hall 8 more loads of crusher run to finish his backfill.
He has since replaced the rear leafs with after market leafs and shackles, he now points straight down the road again.

Very pretty truck!
