Washington: Gun Control Bills to be Voted on in House Committee

This Thursday, February 16th, the Washington House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on House Bill 1387 and House Bill 1122.

House Bill 1387 would impose an annual registration and licensing system on the most popular and commonly owned semi-automatic firearms sold today by classifying them as “assault weapons.”  In addition, it would prohibit the sale and transfer of standard capacity ammunition magazines labeling them as “large-capacity magazines.”  The transfer and sale of these firearms and magazines would be prohibited to anyone other than a federally licensed firearms dealer, a gunsmith or to law enforcement for destruction.

HB 1122 would mandate that firearm owners lock up their firearms at all times when not in use.  This legislation is vaguely written and could potentially subject law-abiding gun owners to gross misdemeanor penalties, including huge fees and potential imprisonment, if they don’t lock their firearms up and render them useless for any self-defense scenario.

It is important that you please contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 1387 and House Bill 1122.  You can also call 1-800-562-6000 to contact your state legislators in support of this important legislation.

Wish I could be there.  I did send another email to my reps & senator - not that it will do any good, they are all sponsors of these bills or the companion SB.  I'm sure they are tired of hearing from me.   :bash:

Can someone send me their e-mails? I'll school them up real quick with mil-spec and include references. I think these dumb reps/senators that never shot a gun or been in the military should not be allowed to vote on something they know squat about. I'll be pissed if any gun related bill/law passes that will effect our 2nd constitutional right.

Would anyone who is a better wordsmith than I be willing to draft a boiler-plate letter that HuntWA people could copy and send to their respective legislators regarding potential constitutional and moral issues with these bills? I've always thought that an influx of the same letter with clearly worded arguments against bills is a more convincing argument than letters that may have varying reason of why they oppose the bill.

I always crack up at the Seattle protests now that have 47 things they are protesting at once...Black Lives Matter, Dakota Access Pipeline, LGBTQ rights, immigrant/illegal alien rights, etc. Focusing on one or two key issues makes for a much more persuasive argument!

But making 223 a sporting caliber is a bad idea,i don't see any bills like this in idaho,Montana, other states that do allow 223 for deer. Not sure what will happen with it,but they will keep trying in till it does pass.

Dear Representative XXXXXXXXX,

Please oppose HB 1387 and HB 1122.

HB 1387 would impose an annual registration and licensing system on the most popular and commonly owned semi-automatic firearms sold today by classifying them as “assault weapons.”  In addition, it would prohibit the sale and transfer of standard capacity ammunition magazines labeling them as “large-capacity magazines.”  The transfer and sale of these firearms and magazines would be prohibited to anyone other than a federally licensed firearms dealer, a gunsmith, or to law enforcement. These are common guns owned and used by many gun owners and hunters in their everyday lives.

This legislation will prevent the citizens of Washington from protecting themselves from criminals and household invasions.

Please take a moment and rethink this issue, we don't make cars illegal because people are killed by wreckless drivers, rather we deal with the drivers who violate driving laws. Please do not take away guns from law abiding citizens. Please write laws that deal with the criminals who violate our laws.

Respectfully,
XXXXXX XXXXXXXX
