Grouse Hunting Tips for Southwest Washington
« on: October 10, 2007, 09:44:49 AM »
Hello,

I'm new to grouse hunting and have been out a couple of times.  I have only seen one bird, and believe I have flushed about two others, but didn't get a look at them.  Is this year a bad year, or am I looking in the wrong places?  Does anybody have any suggestions?

David

im not from down there so i dont know any areas but just like any other hunting. patience. and you might try to stay away from areas where you see a bunch of coyotes.

Thanks for the tip.  The area I have been hunting, is packed with coyotes.  I have seen two and have heard many others.  Probably time to go to another area.

yeah you could take a weekend to nock out a den of yote's and then the grouse will start to come back.

or put the shotgun away and break out the rifle and start calling the yotes. do the local grouse population a favor.

You doing a lot better than I am. Been out in the Greenwater area several times now and haven't seen a thing. I hear them in the trees in the late morning when I'm leaving the area.
I've worked the area over  on FS Rd. 72.

Sorry I'm not much help, but in the same boat as you!!!

And, if you are not into the coyote hunting thing, put the "hit" on them by posting here their exact location for some nice coyote hunter to later do the dirty deed for you....   :chuckle:

Where you at in SW washington, a friend and I busted 4 up in gifford last weekend, got 1. I took a picture from 2 weekends ago when i got 1 alone, and flushed 5. Could always use another grouse hunter on the mountainside. The more we get lined up pushing, the better the chance we knock down some birds! I hunt about halfway between Ashford and Packwood. Gonna go bang some chukar this weekend near yakima, but will be working blues up in gifford again next weekend.
